FEMINIST ICON - ACTIVIST, WRITER, ARTIST, TREE FARMER KATE MILLETT was one of the most active and passionate of pioneer feminists, Born in 1934 in St Paul, MN. she got her B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1956 and in 1958 earned a first-class degree with honors from St Hilda's College, Oxford. In 1961 she went to Japan to study art. Two years later she returned to the United States with fellow sculptor Fumio Yoshimura, whom she married in 1965. The two lived in a three-story loft in New York's Bowery. Fumio's gallery on the top floor displayed his ethereal kites and flying sculptures, Kate's, on the second floor were filled with her down-to-earth art, all feminist statements. In 1967, with the founding of NYNOW and the burgeoning radical groups in New York Kate was busy around the clock leading demonstrations, organizing, speaking on radio and TV. She became famous when her doctoral thesis was published as SEXUAL POLITICS. Since then she's travelled around the world speaking and inspiring women. Today she divides her time between her New York apartment and her tree farm in Poughkeepsie, writing, sculpting, and painting.
