May 2010
Dear Feminist Friend:
Because of your help, VFA has accomplished almost everything we set out to do in 1993. But we're not retiring, we're rebooting! So we're asking you once again to give generously to help keep VFA going.
Why are we rebooting? The excitement about VFA is growing among women of all ages, and the need for a support group to boost the morale and enthusiasm of activists and to mentor younger women is clearly recognized. Young women, from ages twenty on, now want to join us -- and everyone wants VFA to continue to support and serve veteran feminists as long as there is a movement. (pictured, Ashley Judd at March for Choice in Washington, 2007) At our last board meeting in Dallas, (March 20) besides welcoming new members Zoe Nicholson of L.A., Sally Lunt of Boston, Beverly McCarthy of Stockton. CA and Bonnie Wheeler of Dallas (Eleanor Pam from NY and Fl, the other new board member, couldn't be there), the board passed new Bylaws. From now on membership is open to any feminist who wants to be a member, no matter how long they have served! However, only those who have been active for 20 years can be officers or board members of VFA.
The consensus was that, while we've done almost everything we set out to do, the two goals we have not fully accomplished are "to pass the torch" and to recruit new activists for feminism among younger women and men. But now that we've honored thousands of pioneer feminists at 34 events around the country, and now that Feminists Who Changed America is published, and now that our files are archived at Duke University, we can spend more time mentoring and learning from our daughters, granddaughters and friends. And also, from our sons and grandsons and their friends. So we've resolved that from now on we'll be involving younger women in our events .
The times they are a changing!
Please think of what VFA has done for the Movement and for you. We've reunited and in many cases re-activated the feminists who built the movement. We've honored, and called public attention to thousands of activists who were being forgotten. We've made a permanent document of all this on our webpage, www.vfa.us. And we hope we've made you proud that you are part of this movement. Most of all, we pledge that in no way, NO WAY! will the accomplishments and the heroes of the Second Wave be forgotten - as were the those of almost every feminist movement from the beginning of history!
VFA's expenses are minimal. My apartment serves as our office, and most of us donate our professional services. But the recent recession has devastated VFA's finances this year, and our bank balance is very dangerously low. So if you can afford it, please, dear feminist, be as generous as you can this year. And please remember VFA in your will!
Without your help NOTHING would have happened. So we thank you again and again, for all you did in the past, and all you are doing for the future to make the movement MOVE!
With love and gratitude, For your officers and board,
Jacqui
