Here in LA there is a well publicized event, Break The Chains. It begins with a rally in Westwood and at 6 PM there will be a march. Hundreds of women and the men who love them will be collecting, unifying and advancing women and girls everywhere. But the fact of the matter is that millions of women around the world are attending their own IWD demonstration and march. They are taking care of the kids, meeting the demands of their households, most likely working a second job, maybe even living in fear that if they left their home for the day, they could put their families in danger. In some places women are carrying water, seeking shelter, vigilantly protecting their children and praying for peace. And there are women who are busy creating their revolution in words, in pickets, in stating their truth in their churches, schools and extended families.
You can be certain that humanity is in revolution, just as trees reach for the light, the oppressed reach for the sky and turn with the rotation of the planets for freedom.
I am a proud supporter of the women of Afghanistan, Iran, Uganda, Rwanda... how do we leave out anyone? A mother in New Orleans, a queer in Albany, a run-away in Fort Worth. Women in all 192 countries are longing for equality. I am one.
