Greetings!
Week 4 of the "12 Weeks of Christmas" is upon us, with the last of the four card projects. As you may already know, each week, through early December, I will provide you, my newsletter readers, with specific instructions for gifts and cards that you can make. The next few weeks will bring projects for making gifts and home decor items, and the last four weeks will be quick projects on tags, bags, and wraps.
All instructions will be included in the newsletter. If you would like to purchase a kit to make the featured item, you will be able to do so. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your crafty friends so they can join the fun. (And you'll have a chance to win a prize!)
This week features the Stampin' Up! rubber stamp set "Scandinavian Season" and the companion "Scandinavian" Stampin' Around Wheel. This card was featured in the Holiday Mini-Catalog. I love it so much I am considering using it for my own holiday greetings this year.
I have lots of classes coming up for the holidays as well, so take a peek at those. If you are not local, they are all available as virtual classes as well, with step-by-step instructions, and all materials pre-cut for you. Contact me for details!
Finally, I want to announce that I have a winner on my "50 for $50" board. Some of you have been waiting a LONG time for it to fill up, but it finally did. The winning number was 46, which was chosen by Julie P of Ashland, MA. Congrats, Julie!! I'll be in touch.
Keep creating!

Scandinavian Season Card Instructions

I love the combination of patterns and colors on this card, and that it uses some off-beat color, like Chocolate Chip! In fact, I like this design so much, I am considering using it for my own holiday greetings this year!
You may recognize the design, which was featured in the Stampin' Up! Holiday Mini Catalog. (Don't have one?!? Just contact me and I'll drop it in the mail so you can see the great products out for the holidays.) Stampin' Up! showed the card using a rub-on for the greeting. This is great if you are only making one card. But if you want to make multiples (like me!) you need to stamp the sentiment. I've explored a few that work, and have a list of alternatives, below, for you to choose from.
You will need both the " Scandinavian Season" stamp set (Catalog #111774) and the " Scandinavian" Stampin' Around Wheel (Catalog #113633) that are shown in the Holiday Mini catalog. You'll also need the following:
- Kraft cardstock, 5-1/2" X 8-1/2" (don't fold it yet!)
- Chocolate Chip cardstock 5-1/2" X 2-1/2"
- Old Olive cardstock 3-3/4" X 2-5/8"
- Naturals Ivory cardstock 3-1/2" X 2-3/8"
- Naturals Ivory cardstock scrap, at least 1-1/2" square
- Striped pattern paper from Ski Slope Designer Series paper (Holiday Mini Catalog #112994) - Cut a strip that includes the red pattern and the green/brown pattern, 5-1/2" X 1-1/8"
- Kraft 3/8" taffeta ribbon, approx 15" long
- One flat-backed cream-colored pearl from the Pretties Kit
- Old Olive Ink- either the Craft ink, or a combination of Classic ink and a Versamark pad
- An uninked cartridge for the Stampin' Around Wheel, plus a Versamark re-inker
- White Craft ink and white embossing powder (if you are stamping your sentiment)
- OR, a white rub-on sentiment, such as "Christmas Wishes" from the Old Saint Nick Rub-ons (Catalog #112844)
Before you fold your Kraft cardstock, you want to use the Scandinavian wheel down the center. First, load up the uninked cartridge with the Versamark re-inker. (If you are not familiar with how to use a Stampin' Around Wheel, check out this quick tutorial on my website.)
With the card in front of you in "landscape" orientation, make a light pencil mark 3-3/4" from the left edge. Then, using a ruler or the Stampin' Around Wheel Guide, run the Scandinavian wheel along the guide (the wheel is to the right side of the guide). Give the Versamark ink a minute or two to dry and darken before you fold your card in half an crease the fold with your bone folder.
Place your desired sentiment in the lower right corner of the Chocolate Chip cardstock. It is easier to do this now, before you have attached it to your card. Plus, if you don't like how the embossing comes out, your only loss is the Choco Chip, and not whole card! Using your Stamp-a-ma-jig, position the greeting about 1/2" from the bottom of the card, and 1/4" from the right side. I highly recommend the use of an Embossing Buddy, since any stray white embossing powder will REALLY show up against the brown card stock. After you've used your Buddy, stamp with the sentiment with White Craft ink, and emboss with White embossing powder. (I tried using clear embossing powder, but sometimes the White craft ink is less thick than you want, and against the brown, it almost comes out tan. If you use white-on-white, you are assured of having a nice bright contrast). When you emboss, be sure that you heat long enough so the white embossing powder flows and is smooth and not puckery, like an orange peel.
Here are two that I made. The first is from a Hostess stamp set ("Best Yet"), which you can earn when you spend $150 in product (or host a workshop with sales of at least $150). It reads "A very merry Christmas to you".

The second choice is "Seasons Greeting" from the " Snow Swirled" stamp set (see image below).

Some other sentiments from different stamp sets are listed below. Basically, anything that is no bigger than 2" wide, and 1" tall should work.
An alternative is to use a white rub-on sentiment, which also looks great. Here is an example of a rub-on sentiment from last year's "Seasonal Sayings" rub-ons:

The rub-on is a great choice if you are only making one card. (I find the Stampin' Up! rub-ons to be of very high quality. They don't break apart while you are applying them, and the edges disappear against your background, as you can see above.)
When you are happy with your white sentiment, attach the Chocolate Chip to the Kraft card base using SNAIL adhesive, and leaving a scant 1/8" of Kraft showing on the right edge of the card.
Attach the strip of Ski Slope Designer Paper using SNAIL adhesive, with the red pattern on the right side. It should fit nicely between the Chocolate Chip on the right and the Scandinavian stamped design on the left. If you need to overlap one side or the other, overlap the Chocolate Chip.
Tie the Kraft taffeta ribbon around the card, where the red paper and Chocolate Chip cardstock meet. This is one of FEW times when I till tell you to tie a "Granny" knot, instead of a square knot. Think "right over left and under, and repeat" to make the knot. This way, the ends will lie at right angles to the length of the ribbon on the card. You might have to play with "right over left" verus "left over right", depending on how you position your card and ribbon when you are tying it, and what angle you want the ends to lie at.
Stamp the tree on the Naturals Ivory cardstock with Old Olive ink. You are going to emboss it with clear embossing powder. SO you can use either Old Olive Craft ink (a pigment ink meant for embossing) OR you can ink your stamp with Versamark first, then with Old Olive Classic ink. This second approach is a way to make a "hybrid" ink out of any dye ink, and is a good fall-back if you have not invested in both types of ink pads.
Stamp the full tree once, then re-ink the flower in the lower corner of the image, and stamp it on a second, scrap piece of Naturals Ivory. Emboss both with clear embossing powder. Distress the edges of the cardstock with the tree image using either the Cutter Kit (Catalog #106958) or the blade of your scissors. (Please be careful if you use your scissors!!). Cut out the flower image with a fine-tipped pair of scissors, and mount on top of the same flower on the tree image, using Stampin' Dimensionals. Add a cream-colored flat-backed pearl to the center of the flower using Mini Glue Dots.

Mount the tree to the Old Olive cardstock with Stampin' Dimensionals, and then mount the whole image to the card base, again with Stampin' Dimensionals. I mounted it about 3/8" from the top and about 1/2" from the right edge of the card.
There you have it! Your own Scandinavian Season card to send to friends and family!
