12 Weeks of Christmas - Week 7

Greetings!

If you are new to my newsletter, you'll be happy to know that each week until December 25, you will be receiving the basic instructions for making a special card, small gift, or other handcrafted item for the holidays.  The first four weeks focused on holiday greeting cards, and this is now the third week of gift ideas.  This week's newsletter includes instructions for a lovely votive holder that evokes thoughts of snowflakes gently falling.  It makes up quickly, so you can make two for your mantle, or make multiples to give as gifts to teachers and other people who provide your services throughout the year.

With each newsletter also comes the opportunity to purchase a full kit for making the project.  Alternatively, you have the option of purchasing pieces of each kit, if, for example, you already have the stamp set, and only want to purchase the supplies and pre-cut cardstock.  OR, if you have good intentions, but there simply are not enough hours in the day, you'll also have the choice to buy the finished product.  It's not too late to purchase the projects from Weeks 1-6!!  Scroll down to the bottom of this newsletter for the info.

Snow Globe Votive Instructions

Snow Globe Votive close-up

This is an incredibly simple project- you can make one easily in about an hour.  All you do is emboss snowflake images on white tissue paper, tear them into pieces, and then glue them onto the inside surface of a clear glass votive holder.  It's a great project to do with kids- although you might want to instruct them to glue their paper on the outside, as that is simpler for little fingers to manage.

The "Snowflake Spot" is the stamp set used for this project.  I used the all but the largest snowflake, and I did not use the words "Joy" or "Cheer" on mine, but you certainly could.

For this project you will also need a piece of white tissue paper about 12" X 12", Versamark ink, and Silver Stampin' Emboss Powder.  You will need your Heat Tool to emboss the images, and you will need some white glue to attach the tissue to the votive.  I used Aleene's Reverse Collage Glue, which is specifically intended for use on glass.  You can find it at your local craft stores, and at all kinds of places on the internet.  You can also use any white glue that dries clear.  I used a foam brush to apply the glue.  Oh yeah- you also need a clear glass votive holder.  Any shape will do, but I liked this round one because it reminds me of a snowball once it is complete.  My votive holder is about 3-1/2" across and 3" tall.  Give your votive a quick cleaning with some window cleaner before you begin.

Snow Glove votive stamping in progressStart by stamping the snowflake images on the tissue paper with Versamark ink.  You can't see the stamped image very well- so you might want to stamp a few, then apply the embossing powder, and then stamp a few more.  Continue in this fashion until your sheet is more or less full.  Leave a little space between the images, because you are going to tear them out of the page.

Snow Globe Embossed images

Snow Globe torn pieceWhen you tear them, leave a little bit of paper around the image, but not more than 1/2".  See the example on the right.  I ended up using 3 of the large snowflake, 5 of the medium-size, and 5 of the small.  I also used the image of dots to fill in - there are about 8 of those.   Tear out all of your images and put them in little piles according to design.

Snow Globe applying glueUse a foam brush, or inexpensive (ie disposable!) bristle brush to apply your glue to the inside of the votive holder.  Do little bits at a time- only a little more area than it takes to apply your next image.  (You don't want the glue to dry while you are fiddling around picking the next image....)

Snow Globe applying pieceApply the three largest images first.  I spaced mine more or less evenly around the globe, but varied the position from top to bottom- ie I did not always put it in the middle of the globe.  Use your fingers to gently smooth out the tissued paper, but be careful because the paper is very delicate once it is damp from the glue.  (Helpful hint:  I like to keep a baby wipe handy to remove any glue that finds its way onto my finger tips!)

Continue applying pieces, going in order of largest image to smallest.  Overlap the torn edges just a little bit so there is no glass left uncovered.  Apply glue as you go.  If needed, you can tear off small pieces of plain white tissue to fill in any gaps that remain when you have used all of the images that you care to use.  Finish with a coat of glue over the entire inside.  When it is dry, you can gently tear off any pieces that are sticking up over the top of the opening.

Snow Globe Krylon penAs always, I used my favorite tool, this time the Silver Krylon Leafing Pen, to add a finishing touch to the top edge of the globe.

Let the glue dry overnight and then you can light up your candle to warm those winter nights!
