Greetings!

Denise Lewis Premschak

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.

Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees."

--John Muir

While in Beijing in 2009, I was intrigued by the vast and elaborate gardens - one, in particular, named "Heralding Spring Pavilion".  How reverent.  How lovely.   Unfortunate that only the emperor's leisurely court was permitted loveliness.  I have a place where I watch the riotous Rocky Mountain Spring come in (I don't climb a mountain, just some stairs to a deck, but it IS over a mile high!).  Sunshine flows, often preceded by a storm.  Nature's peace prevails.   Heralding Spring is a noble privilege, indeed.

Approaching conference at ISSSEEM, days are full of the noble.  Staff and volunteers engage with joy in the mighty work we are up to -and one day melts into the next.   Yes, the time is fast approaching - if you'll be joining us in June, be mindful of these things:

  • Register before May 1 for the lowest conference rate.  Make your hotel reservations now.
  • To advertise your organization or service in the Conference Program or Research Symposium Proceedings, see below.

Volunteer Spotlight

ISSSEEM thrives on the enthusiasm and support of its members and volunteers. We value and appreciate each and everyone who lends a helping hand: Our Board of Directors, Publication Editors, Program Committee, Conference Volunteers and those who assist with projects through out the year. The significant contributions of our volunteer staff are essential for smooth operation and continued success.

The volunteer spotlight this month is not on a person, but on BRIDGES Magazine which is created by volunteer Editors, Celia Coates and Lucia Thornton.

In 1990 IBridges MagazineSSSEEM published its first newsletter for members, a newsletter that became BRIDGES.  Along with its partner publication, the peer-reviewed scientific journal SUBTLE ENERGIES, it was designed as a teaching document to explore and present information about a field that was then barely recognized.  Both partners publish discoveries in the study of consciousness, healing, human potential, and psi or paranormal experiences.  Both teach about the same subjects - but in different ways.  BRIDGES Magazine's approach is personal, experiential and practical.  ISSSEEM's community is made up of people with different backgrounds, careers, and interests.  Many of them know about subtle energies through their own life experiences, and this is what the articles in BRIDGES often feature.

Carol Schneider, the first and long-time editor of BRIDGES as well as one of the four founding members of ISSSEEM, suggested the magazine's name since the study of subtle energies creates a way to cross the distance between science and spirit.  Some researchers and academics are creating that bridge through the rigorous methods of standard science, but many of us find ourselves traveling from measurable reality to the subtle realms in more personal ways. We can have experiences, for example, of telepathy, healing, clairvoyance or remote viewing, mystical states of being, precognition, manifestations of spirit, out of body experiences (OBEs), or advanced levels of consciousness that are difficult to document or measure, but we know that they are very real - and meaningful.

An experience of subtle energies involves us in a powerful mystery. We can respond with curiosity (What was that?) that can become doubt (Did that really happen? Or, "Does that mean anything?), and move on to fear ("I don't want that to happen again!" Or, "I can't possibly tell anyone about this!")  We've heard from readers that they've found something in BRIDGES that has been reassuring  ("That's like me."), or encouraging ("I could do that."). They discover that they are not alone - or crazy.  These are the experiences that shape how we think about reality and, if we share what we have learned, we can change our world for the better.

We hope that BRIDGES Magazine intrigues and informs you.  Please let us know what you care about and what you would like to read.

Florence Nightingale

The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA)

Announces

the  12th Annual Worldwide Commemorative Moment

Nursing's Florence Nightingale

May 12, 2011

On May 12th at noon, every nurse around the world is invited to pause and observe a moment of silence in celebration of holistic nursing and Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the founder of modern nursing. The goal is to reach every nurse in the world with the fundamental principles of holistic nursing. These principles are based on Florence Nightingale's philosophies of caring for the whole person - mind, body and spirit. Holistic nurses join together each year during Nurses Week (May 6-12, 2011) to show their gratitude for Nightingale's contributions to both modern health care and holistic nursing. This is an ideal opportunity to share the spirit of holism during Nurses Week with the entire nursing community.  More Info

Charles Tart, 2010 Presidential Address

Charles TartMany of you know that one of my primary interests is bridging first-class science and first-class spirituality.  2009's The End of Materialism book was a major effort in this direction, arguing that, given scientific evidence, it is reasonable to be both scientific and spiritual in life.

My presidential address at the 2010 Conference: Evidence-Based Spirituality for the 21st Century can serve as a summary of the highlights of that book as well as stimulation for directions.  To contact me, go to www.paradigm-sys.com

Healing Stories

Healing Stories:
My Journey from Mainstream Psychiatry Toward Spiritual Healing
by Robert W. Alcorn, M.D.

This book presents a holistic view of psychiatric intervention based on the following principles:

  • The medical model of the human being is insufficient. Despite advances in modern physics, the medical model is still based on obsolete science.
  • Altered states of consciousness are important in reaching the inner resources for healing that lie within the patient .
  • All things in life are alive and have their own type of consciousness, the animals, the plants, the rocks, even the organs and cells within our bodies.
  • Consciousness exists independently of the body and has a primary role in the growth and development of the body and in its healing processes.
  • The healer can help the patient best by showing the patient how to access his/her own inner resources.
  •  The role of the healer and his/her relationship to the patient is a sacred trust requiring impeccable behavior and a profound degree of objectivity, courage and faith.
  •  The patient's role is to accept the challenge of growing into a whole person, responsible for his/her own life and spiritual direction.

Born to run

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

by Christopher McDougall

Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world's greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence.

With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultrarunners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to a climactic race in the Copper Canyons. Born to Run is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.
