Greetings!
Greetings ISSSEEM Community!
Summer wanes and Autumn beckons. The days are getting shorter, nights cooler and the mountain aspens are already alight with golden glory here in Colorado. For me, this season always stimulates activity. Fortunately, there is no shortage of projects nor productivity at ISSSEEM thanks to devoted local volunteers and dedicated staff moving us into a new season for ISSSEEM . . . literally and energetically!
The ISSSEEM office is relocating to a more efficient (cost-effective) business environment effective October 1. We have a new address and fax number. Our business phone number will stay the same. (see end of this newsletter)
In response to your requests, ISSSEEM's conference bookstore selections are now available online! Support ISSSEEM when you purchase authors' and artists' works through this portal. Thank you, Maryann, (volunteer bookstore manager) for your expert selection of tantalizing and relevant titles and Linda (staff), for setting up our Amazon affiliated system. New titles will be continually added. Remember every little bit helps ISSSEEM so shop here first!
We have added a Facebook Fan page to spread the word about ISSSEEM and open dialogue among those interested and involved. We invite you to visit, participate, join the discussion, create a new topic and tell your friends and colleagues about ISSSEEM. Follow this link: ISSSEEM FACEBOOK FAN PAGE
I M P O R T A N T! October 1, 2009 is the last date to submit a Letter of Intent to present a breakout, workshop, or special event, or address at our 20th Annual Conference-June 2010, entitled Evidence-based Spirituality. You will find the proposal process has been streamlined even more for 2010. Write a simple and straightforward letter to tell us about your proposed program. Here is the link: http://www.issseem.org/conference.cfm
ISSSEEM is reorganizing its physical space and shifting into nimble, more progressive ways to serve its members and the world. I am reminded of the art and practice gardeners use this time of year: composting. It may sound inelegant as analogy, but here's the thought:
We take all that has gone before to prepare the soil for a new growing season - there's added ease at sowing and better yield at harvest.
"Cornu-copious" Blessings.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE OCTOBER 1, 2009
CLICK HERE TO SUBMITThe ISSSEEM 2010 conference theme Evidence-based Spirituality for the 21st Century will bring together the fascinating, the technical, the studies, the applications and the search for meaning and value in human life. Thought and action will be stimulated around the development of evidence-based, or at least evidence enriched spirituality that is effective and compatible with modern science. This calls for essential science, not scientism, to refine and integrate spiritual practices with scientific knowledge for the advancing human happiness, psychological and bodily health, spiritual growth and beneficial life styles for oneself and others.
It is time to move on from seeking the scientific basis for humans as spiritual beings to practical applications of what is already known. For example, how can prayer healing and psychic healing be taught more widely and effectively? What's the best way to integrate these into the best of regular medicine? Do we survive bodily death in some form, as some mediumistic communications and reincarnation research suggest? How can we get better evidence for or against this idea, and if the evidence keeps piling up for it, what are implications for how we live our lives? Detailed evidence of human spiritual qualities is presented in ISSSEEM President, Charles Tart's just published book, The End of Materialism: How Evidence of the Paranormal is Bringing Science and Spirit Together Oakland, CA: New Harbinger, 2009

Energy Medicine in the United States: Historical Roots and the Current Status
by Karl Maret, M.D., M.Eng. President, Dove Health Alliance
Brief Historical Perspective of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine
The field of energy medicine has a long history in the United States
dating back almost two centuries. During the 19th century, there was a
widespread interest in electrotherapy devices and many were sold in
mail order catalogs. An overview of the development of the field of
electrotherapy can be found in Dr. James Oschman's book, "Energy
Medicine: The Scientific Basis" (Oschman, 2000). Little academic
research was done in this field in the United States after the Flexner
Report of 1910 led to the overhaul of medical school education and
research.

Where Body Meets Soul: Subtle Energy Healing Practices for Physical and Spiritual Self-Care by Elizabeth Frediani

Elizabeth Frediani draws upon her 35-years of experience working with
subtle energy practices to present this articulate, accessible manual
on energy-based healing. Her well-crafted exercises address your
ongoing need for physical, emotional, and spiritual self-care, yet lead
you beyond simply problem solving symptoms.
Frediani's understanding of the natural relationship between the subtle
energy system and transcendent states of awareness is unparalleled. In
a balanced and insightful way, she also teaches you how to awaken your
consciousness and utilize your inner source of peace, compassion, and
spiritual revitalization. From comprehensive theory to step-by-step
instruction, this book advances our education in the true meaning of
body-mind-soul medicine. For both advanced and beginning
practitioners of subtle energy healing. The exercises are exquisite in
their simplicity and profound in their effectiveness. Great book for
holistic nurses and other healthcare practitioners wishing to
incorporate energy healing into their clinical practice and self-care
repertoire."
Spontaneous Evolution By Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. and Steve Bhaerman
We've all heard
stories of people who've experienced seemingly miraculous recoveries
from illness, but can the same thing happen for our world? According to
pioneering biologist Bruce H. Lipton, it's not only possible, it's
already occurring.
In Spontaneous Evolution,
this world-renowned expert in the emerging science of epigenetics
reveals how our changing understanding of biology will help us navigate
this turbulent period in our planet's history and how each of us can
participate in this global shift.
In collaboration with political philosopher Steve Bhaerman, Dr. Lipton invites readers to reconsider: the "unquestionable" pillars of biology, including random evolution, survival of the fittest, and the role of DNA; the relationship between mind and matter; how our beliefs about nature and human nature shape our politics, culture, and individual lives; and how each of us can become planetary "stem cells" supporting the health and growth of our world.
By questioning the old beliefs that got us to where we are today and
keep us stuck in the status quo, we can trigger the spontaneous
evolution of our species that will usher in a brighter future.

Upcoming Conferences
Dear Colleagues:
I will be participating in the Educating World Citizens conference in Washington, DC, October 8-9, 2009, along with Lee Schulman, Nel Noddings, and Kathleen McCartney among others. Organized by the Mind and Life Institute, this conference will bring together an assembly of prominent educators and researchers to join His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, in discussions on reforming education to include the cultivation of attention, emotional balance, kindness and compassion.
I hope you can join us. It is important that we open our hearts and minds to the stimulus of this kind of discussion, so that we can respond with fresh thinking to inspire innovation in our educational systems.
Please go to http://www.educatingworldcitizens.org to see the lineup of presenters and register for this event. I hope to see you there.
