Request for Assistance  from Charles Tart, Ph.D.
Dear ISSSEEM Member,
My specific goal in writing you today is two-fold. First, to find potential PhD committee members for one of my students at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP), Richard Knowles, whose research on potential brain wave entrainment to the Earth's Schuman resonance has ground to a halt with the unexpected death of one of his committee members, and secondly, to create possible future links between ITP graduate students and ISSSEEM members, since the varied expertise of ISSSEEM members often overlaps with the interests of ITP's students. This can help in the advancement of knowledge for all of us.
The basic requirements to serve as an outside expert on an ITP doctoral dissertation committee are having a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) yourself and some demonstrated knowledge in the specific area of a student's research, such as appropriate publications. There is an honorarium for such service.
If you are interested in either my request for a committee member for Richard Knowles (more specification of needed expertise below) or as a potential future committee member for other ITP students, send an email directly to Richard rknowles@itp.edu . In the subject line, indicate whether you are interested in ITP committee work in general or specifically in Richard's committee. Please outline your basic qualifications, degrees, research interests and expertise. No need for a whole Curriculum Vita at this stage, just a few lines here.
Here, from Richard Knowles are his specific needs:
I am performing a study comparing photic driving brainwave entrainment with a novel electromagnetic modality. Because of the ostensibly unique properties of the Schumann Resonance (about 7.83Hz), this low frequency signal will be used as the entrainment signal in this experiment to see if any interesting effects are produced. I am now looking for a third committee member who has training, skills, and experience with EEG acquisition and analysis. The most critical help I will be needing is with statistically analyzing EEG data to determine if entrainment was produced by either of the two techniques, and if so, how great was its expression (effect size). This will most likely require the use of MatLab or EEGLab for MatLab, so skills with these applications would be sublimely helpful. I will be using a Deymed 32-channel EEG system, and will be using 19-channel recording conforming to the 10-20 system. I have a copy of Neuroguide Deluxe as well, and will be using it to bandpass filter my data as well as de-artifacting it. I've spoken with Robert Thatcher (creator of Neuroguide) many times, and he feels that Neuroguide is inadequate for performing the actual data analysis, so this is why I'm thinking more and more that MatLab or EEGLab (or similar application) will need to be used for that purpose. If you are interested, please me know, and I will provide much more detailed information.
