DR. BREM
 Alla, Virginia and Dr

Our would renowned Doctor has been traveling again.  In June she spoke at CARS (Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery) in Berlin, Germany.  CARS is a large international conference on the latest technologies integrating computers in radiology and surgery.

From Berlin she was off to Israel where she organized the US / Israel
Breast Imaging Update that included nearly 200 people as well as physicians from Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.  Nearly all the breast imagers in Israel attended.  Furthermore, it was the first time ever that breast imaging technologists received hands on training to optimize position and mammographic imaging. The conference was in conjunction with the Israel Cancer Association.

All of this while attending to her patients at GW and continuing her research projects in DC.

Summertime!

We hope you are all enjoying the joys of summer, with family gatherings, backyard barbecues and fun vacations.  You will be comforted to know that Brem Foundation has been busy writing grants, continuing to help women through the Biopsy Fund, and finalizing dates for fall events.  In this newsletter read about a new research project Dr. Brem and her research coordinators are working on and, if you qualify for the study, you can take part.

RESEARCH PROJECT - YOU CAN HELP!

Would you like to volunteer to take part in a Dr. Brem research study regarding a new ultrasound?

The purpose of the study is to determine if having Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) in conjunction with a routine digital screening mammogram is more sensitive to detecting breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue compared to getting a routine digital screening mammogram alone.

Breast cancer has a much higher survival rate when found early. Dense breast tissue can make breast cancer detection more difficult to detect with mammography. ABUS uses sound waves at a safe frequency (there is no radiation) to create pictures of internal breast tissue.

Whether ABUS should become part of the routine yearly screening in women whose dense breast tissue could impact the accuracy of their yearly mammograms is what this study is designed to find out.

The qualifications for study participation are:
Woman over 25 years of age
Breast density >50%
No history of breast cancer or treatment, surgery, trauma, or abnormalities within the last 12 months
Not pregnant or breast-feeding
Not planning on becoming pregnant in the next 15 months
Willing to comply with study protocol and follow-up recommendations
Plan to return to George Washington University in 12 months to undergo routine screening mammography

If you would like more information, or would like to participate in this study, please contact: Lauren Rechtman or Alison Kidwell at (202) 741-2244 or lrechtman@mfa.gwu.edu or akidwell@mfa.gwu.edu
