Greetings!

In recent months, the Brem Foundation has made great strides toward accomplishing goals thanks to lots of work, creative networking and the talent, time & generosity from Foundation supporters.  Many thanks to YOU for Making a Difference!

As you read the exciting progress listed below, keep in mind there is much more to accomplish.  The Brem Foundation needs your support to continue its important mission in the fight against breast cancer.
Making a Difference

Research Coordinator - The Brem Foundation is assisting with funding a research coordinator at George Washington University Medical Center to work directly with Dr. Rachel Brem.   A world-renowned leader in research and implementation of innovative technology, Dr. Brem has needed a research coordinator to aid in the publication of her research to bring the most recent information and protocols to women around the globe.  The Foundation has designated $40,000 to support this important component in the fight against breast cancer.  To read Dr. Brem's most recent professional papers visit Dr. Brem In Print on the Foundation's web site at www.bremfoundation.org

Latest Technology - We are excited to report that thanks to your help, the Foundation has made a deposit on the latest Dilon 6800 Gamma Camera.  The Dilon camera, which exceeds $200,000, will allow Dr. Brem and other doctors at George Washington University Medical Center's Breast Imaging Center to provide earlier diagnosis of breast cancer.  F. Lon Slane, President of Dilon Technologies, is instrumental in making the camera purchase possible with a significant donation.  He lowered the price of the camera and arranged an incremented payment plan to allow time for additional monies to be raised to pay the balance of the camera.  If you would like to help with the purchase of this vital piece of technology, please send a tax-deductible donation to:

Power of Orange Hangs Proud

The oil painting, Power of Orange, by color abstractionist Ellen Gordon Gordon, has been installed at George Washington University Medical Center's Breast Imaging and Intervention Center as a gift to the Brem Foundation from Tom and Alexandra Clancy.  Soon, special acknowledgment plaques will accompany Gordon's 56" X 66" work.  Gordon explains that her vision for the painting focused on "orange, a universal color of healing.  In color therapy, orange is used to raise energy and increase immunity.  Orange is associated with the flow of energy through the entire being.  The abstract images in the Power of Orange may suggest orange energy moving mountains."  When you visit GW, make a point to view this exciting new addition to the Breast Imaging and Intervention Center.

Fundraising Update

Grant applications

The Foundation is aggressively working on grant applications.  With the help of grant writer, Camille Reynolds, the Foundation is applying to Safeway's grant program to assist in increasing the Mammovan's activity by two additional days per week at a cost of $300,000 per year.  The Foundation will also submit an application to the Combined Federal Campaign National Capital Area (CFCNCA).  CFC's efforts support and promote philanthropy by combining resources for a coordinated yearly appeal to Federal workers.  The Brem Foundation will benefit from Federal employees who earmark the Foundation when they make contributions during annual fundraising campaigns in the workplace.  CFC is the largest workplace giving campaign in the world, and CFCNCA is the largest regional program in the entire CFC!

These grant applications require the Foundation to have a professional review of our finances.  Through the generosity of Calvert County CPA, Mark Todd, the Foundation is in the process of completing this review.  The Foundation thanks Mark for significantly reducing his fees to graciously accommodate the Foundation's budget.

            Gatherings

Monarchs & Brem bySharon Allen Gilder

Monarchs of the winged variety put wings on hope at Olney resident Jody Goldkind's Brunch & Brem event held June 3rdat the Ballroom at Sandy Spring's Oak Room.  Jody's butterfly theme paired with abundant splashes of orange, good will and generosity raised $4163for the Brem Foundation.  Jody, an event planner, said she was drawn to the foundation when she attended a similar Brem event at a client's home.  When she learned Dr. Brem is on staff at GW, there was an immediate connection.  Jody's 82 year old mother, Dotty Kivitz, is a three time survivor of breast cancer and had her treatment at GW.  Jody said she felt empowered hearing Dr. Brem speak and wanted to share her message with all the other women she cares about in her life

Partnering with her on June 3rd was long-time Olney business owner Barry Schwartz of Schwartz Kosher Catering and Olney's landmark deli, B.J. Pumpernickel's.  Why Schwartz?  Jody said, "Because he has always done a lot for charities and has a giving heart."  Schwartz generously donated his time, use of the Oak Room and cost of the buffet.  Jody shared, "This event is a time for me to give something back, for women to spread their energies, open their minds and spread awareness."  Her fifteen-year-old daughter, Jayme, created her own guest list for the event with a group of peers because, in her words, "You're never too young to relate to the importance of taking care of your health, taking care of yourself."

"Believe" T-shirts with a Monarch motif, fringed fleece throws and hand-knitted scarves were created and donated to the Brem Angel Shop especially for the event adding a delightful shopping component with all proceeds going to the foundation.  "Butterflies are like little angels," said Jody.  Thanks to Jody and Barry, all in attendance were treated royally to a morning feast of inspiration and positive energy for women's health.
