Greetings!

Welcome New Subscribers !!

I  spent five days identifying and learning 50 species of the Temperate Forest at highlandnaturesanctuary.org I learned so much and feel more connected to nature than ever!!

Yet....five days is a long time for an enthusiastic energetic person -that loves to move -to stand still for very long. Thank goodness one of the other students brought along a hula hoop

Sugar Maple in the background

When I first put the hula hoop on I was moving my hips way to fast trying to keep the hoop up. Traci graciously taught us that it is about slow, steady movement back and forth that gets the results. I quickly caught on as you can see from the pic below LOL!!.

You may think that the Hula Hoop was a fad born in the 1950s, but in fact people were doing much the same thing with circular hoops made from grape vines and stiff grasses all over the ancient world. More than three thousand years ago, children in Egypt played with large hoops of dried grapevines read more here

Last year, at the 9th annual Tree Climbers's Rendezvous we celebrated Saturday night with guest hula hoopers

5 Questions with Kevin Knapp

What led you to take the Basic/Facilitation tree climbing class?

As the challenge course manager at a YMCA camp, I have had trainings to run low ropes courses, high ropes courses, and climbing walls. Camp started a tree climbing program a few years ago and trained several other staff at that time. This past year, the last of those staff members left camp, and it was time for me to be officially trained in order to continue/improve the tree climbing program.

How has completing the class impacted your personal and work life?

Starting with my work life, it not only has allowed me to start to facilitate tree climbing for camp, but to also start to reinvent the program. Personally, the class has given me new friends, a new joy, and a new perspective (I now walk around looking up at trees and tripping on things).

What do you like most about tree climbing? I think the thing I enjoy most is the freedom you have in a tree. Unlike climbing walls or high rope courses, climbing a tree provides opportunities to climb in any direction. There is also something about climbing a tree that can bring out your inner child (granted, working at a camp, my inner child is not all that deep inside).

What will I do differently as a result of taking both classes. Hmmm, I think I will climb trees (sorry, that's my inner sarcasm). While I am excited about climbing trees, I am also excited that I can bring my friends and family along and introduce them to tree climbing.

What would you say to others that may be thinking of taking this class? Do it. Do it! You know you want to. Why are we even debating this. Seriously. Are we still talking about this? What's going on here? Less thinking, more action.....
