Man's heart away from nature becomes hard.  ~Standing Bear

Greetings!

Last week we had a climber that climbed ten feet and had to come down. His face was pale, his body was sweating profusely.

First I acknowledged that it was fantastic that he listened to his body and requested to come down immediately. I took his heart rate, had him lay on the picnic table and eat some fresh pineapple. His symptoms told me something was up ....this never happens.

I asked him, "Were you holding your breath?"

"YES" he said.

"So this is all I want you to concentrate on today....breathing and climbing."

So instead of the other challenges we encourage like limb surfing, hanging upside down, getting in and out of hammocks and hiding monkeys from each other I decided his only challenge would be to get to the first limb without holding his breath.

You know what he did?? He climbed  three different ropes each time getting higher with plenty of color in his face. When we inquired to what everyone learned for the day...  guess what he revealed. That he always holds his breath when learning something new. Now how do you think he can take this into the world?

We want you to hear first hand from people that have climbed with us.

Every week we will feature live videos of climbers in the trees and/or 5 questions with the climber of the week. This way you will know we are telling truth!!

Thanks Shelly! Not just for this, but for helping change my world!!

I'm Jean Simms. I'm an elelmentary teacher and single mother of 3. A few years ago as I was going through my divorce, I decided that if my whole world was going to change, my whole world was going to change for the better. Since then the kids and I have been on one adventure after another. We are going to earn our black belts in karate and have been rock climbing. Then we went tree climbing together.

What led you to take the Basic/Facilitation tree climbing class?

My middle son found out I could take a class, and we could go in trees whenever we wanted. He found it imperative that I take that class!! We have a beautiful elm in our yard. It is the reason I bought the property. It is a magnificent treasure. The thought of playing in him with my kids all summer long was enough to seal the deal.

How has completing the class impacted your personal and work life?

Now that I have completed the class, I am so anxious to get back up in the trees. I am rethinking what I will do with my summers off from teaching. I have already contacted 2 places to work facilitating climbers. I'm very excited about the opportunities it has opened up for me.

What do you like most about tree climbing?

The best part of tree climbing for me is working up a sweat. I love scampering up the tree, getting even higher, and working hard to maneuver around the branches. Then when I've worked up the sweat, I can find a cozy spot and relax. Breathe the fresh air and enjoy the view.

What will you do differently as a result of taking both classes?

I will safely enter my tree at home, be able to entertain my children all summer, and hopefully earn a little cash working at a summer camp or two.

What would you say to others that may be thinking of taking this class?

I would tell anyone thinking of taking the class that I was hesitant at first too. I contemplated the cost. It felt selfish at first to spend the money on this class for ME, instead of on the kids. But my kids get so much out of this from me. Not just climbing, not just time with mom in the trees, but seeing that the world is full of options. You can change your whole world or just parts of it, but always make it better. This class has made mine better
