Military Spouse Professional Licensing Bill
In the recent special session, the state Legislature passed a bill addressing professional licenses for spouses of military personnel in Washington. The law is focused on streamlining the licensing process for military spouses who wish to work in the state. The Pentagon estimates that there are more than 1,600 military spouses who move to Washington each year leave behind jobs that they have professional licenses for, such as teachers, nurses, or accountants.
Efforts to pass this bill were led by Sen. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor. "This is a real opportunity for Washington. Three-quarters of all military spouses want to work to support their families, and a full third of them are in licensed professions," said Kilmer.
"The Department of Defense has made this a priority issue because it impacts the ability of our military families to stay in the service. This is a great way for us to step up and help those who serve us." Mark San Souci, Defense Department Liaison, who brought the issue to the attention of the Sen. Kilmer, notes that WA continues to be at the forefront on these issues.
This bill will help the estimated 43,000 military spouses in the state more smoothly obtain employment in their fields, making the move to Washington easier for military families. For information on the Prosperity Partnership's military work, click here.
