| Disparities in Child Welfare |
In Minnesota, children of color, especially African American and American Indian children, experience disparities in health care, corrections, education, and child welfare. They are disproportionately represented in the child welfare system, and reported to child protection at dramatically higher rates than white children. A recent report from the Minnesota Department of Human Services asserts that, "While the child welfare system must work to assure experiences are fair and equitable once children are involved, there is also a concurrent need to implement strategies that will impact the entry of children disproportionately to the system." We at PCAMN invite you to join us throughout the coming year as we seek learn about and understand the causes of these disparities and work to end them. Watch for information soon on webinars, workshops, and café conversations to explore promoting racial justice and ending disparities. For now, you can begin to learn more by reading these publications: 2010 Kids Count Data Report and Minnesota Child Welfare Disparities Report. |

| Celebrate the Children's Sabbath in your Community | | All of the world's great faith traditions teach that children should be lovingly cared for, and that the needy and vulnerable among us must be treated with compassion and justice. The National Observance of Children's Sabbaths is an annual event that reminds people of faith and their congregations of these obligations, and inspires them to improve the lives of children through political advocacy. Encourage congregations in your community to celebrate Children's Sabbath this October 8-10, to coincide with the 10-10-10 event mentioned above, or October 15-17, to coincide with the annual national observance of Children's Sabbath.
