| CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT | | |
Joan Johnson, Northeast Program Coordinator
Circle of Parents® provides a great place for parents to come on a weekly basis to receive support, education, and resources to strengthen their families and their parenting skills. Because the group seems to attract more mothers than fathers, the Pequot Lakes Circle decided to host an evening to discuss fatherhood that was open to the community. The meeting was held on May 11th from 6: pm to 7:30 pm which is the usual time for their Circle of Parents group meeting. There was childcare available as usual. They had 27 adults attend and 8 children. The gathering was facilitated by Lowell Johnson, a retired teacher who has been very involved in the Fatherhood Coalition in Crow Wing County. Joan Johnson, the Northeast Minnesota Coordinator for Circle of Parents, also facilitated. (read more here) |

Barb Sorum, Director of Family Support Services
Parent Leadership within Circle of Parents® Groups Circle of Parents® Program Coordinators are busy assisting many Circle chapters through their annual re-chartering (which is required on, or close to, each chapter's opening anniversary date). This annual process closely follows our Minnesota Parent Leadership Team suggested Measures of Quality (see page four here). Though each standard is imperative for strong and healthy Circle of Parents® support and education groups, the most rewarding and long-term quality occurs when mentoring parent leadership within the group. Parents develop skills and a commitment to fairness, inclusiveness, equal opportunity, and protection for their children; within their group, their community, and ultimately influencing statewide policies and practices. More Great Ideas Continued from Last Month FLANNEL/FELT BOARDS are great for story times or solo activities. They are easy to make in whatever size is convenient for your situation and pieces can be made in various styles. File Folder Style: Cut a piece of thick flannel or felt to fit inside a regular or legal size file folder. Place a line of glue down the center fold of the folder and all the way around the edges. Carefully place the flannel/felt over the folder, pressing down over glue and allowing to dry before closing the folder. (learn more here) |

Cooking With Kids
The St. Cloud Circle of Parents® did an event called Cooking with Kids. They had the nutritionist from Reach Up come in and show them three recipes that parents could make with their children. Every family got to try all three dishes and bring home a copy of each of the recipes. The food was good, and the kids loved being involved. |
| BOOK OF THE MONTH | |
Priscilla Bennett, Communications Coordinator
The Everything Tween Book: A Parent's Guide to Surviving the Turbulent Pre-Teen Years by Dr. Linda Sonna Has your daughter started wearing makeup and thinking about boys-years before you dreamed it could happen? Are you concerned that your son has been acting up and talking back-while you're sure you should still be his hero? As you know, the "tween" years, which fall between the ages of eight and twelve, can often be a challenging time for both you and your child. The Everything® Tween Book, written by child psychologist Dr. Linda Sonna, helps you navigate the trying years between childhood and adolescence. From addressing such serious issues as eating disorders and school violence to learning tolerance for pink and blue hair, The Everything® Tween Book helps you understand and cope with your child's psychological, social, and emotional needs. |
