Kyle HermanPass the Kyle Herman Bill
When parents send their child to school, they expect their student will be safe from danger. Meet Kyle, now a nine-year old Minnesota student with Down Syndrome who has become the inspiration for must-pass legislation this session at the Minnesota State Legislature. When Kyle was in kindergarten, his classroom teacher abused him on seven separate incidents during his kindergarten year. Minnesota state law does not require parental notification in instances of child maltreatment in a school facility. Through the Kyle Herman Bill of 2010, parents will be notified within ten days after a mandatory report of child abuse in a school facility has been filed involving their student. Moreover the legislation requires the Minnesota Department of Education to notify parents officially within ten days after a completed investigation as to the outcomes and facts. Read more here.

Compassionate Parenting Tip
For children to become givers they need to practice developing their giving skills; which means parents (and other adults) need to practice receiving.

At least once a day this week, acknowledge a gift your child is trying to give and receive it with genuine gratitude.

If you would like to receive Compassionate Parenting Tips each week from the Non-Violent Communication website, you may click here to sign up.

Tell the Extension Center for Family Development about your family concerns. How often do you get the opportunity to tell others what matters most to you and your family's future, no strings attached? Check the website here throughout the month of April. They will feature families' responses on the site. Why do they want to know about you and your family? The Extension Center for Family Development works with Minnesota families and the professionals that serve them. By knowing more about you and your family, they'll hopefully be better equipped to help Minnesota families in the future. For more information, contact Karen Shirer (phone 612-626-3971 or email: shire008@umn.edu).
