Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Prevention
Here is a simpler way to identify the difference between primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention:
- Primary prevention: how we strengthen families and build happy and healthy communities for children so that abuse and neglect never happen.
- Secondary prevention: how we keep abuse and neglect from happening if there is a risk, but nothing has happened.
- Tertiary prevention: how we keep abuse and neglect from happening again once it occurred.
At Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota, our priority is primary prevention. We strive to prevent child abuse and neglect by promoting positive parenting, healthy families, and supportive communities where children are respected and valued.
