Effective Messaging Strategies
The National Conference from Prevent Child Abuse America was held in Milwaukee from May 19-22, and was a great opportunity for six staff from Prevent Child Abuse MN to connect with people all over the country working on primary prevention.  Several of the workshops focused on the importance of how to send the most effective messages about preventing abuse, including a keynote panel on what the future of child abuse prevention will look like.  We took a lot of great information away from the conference, and would like to share some of it in our upcoming e-news.

"Your donors shouldn't have to look for your message. Your message should be delivered to their precise physical, mental, and emotional location. Effective strategic messages need four components: the right mood, messenger, moment, and channel.
  1. When choosing the mood, make sure it is consistent with the unique personality of the cause, the content of the message, and the audience's sense of self. Remember, different audiences require different messages, so the mood also must be tailored to fit each specific audience. Different types of donors may require a different tone of message.
  2. Place your message in other people's mouths. Messengers from outside your cause may be better able to connect with your audience, and they make your promises far more credible than you do yourself. Find someone the donor respects to speak on your behalf.
  3. Identify open-minded moments--the times when your audience is most likely to want the reward you are offering and to be seeking the benefit you provide. Open-minded moments occur when audiences are thinking about an action and are able to take it. Is there a major news story or trend that a donor is under pressure to respond to - and can you position your organization as that response?
  4. Match the open-minded moment to the right channel. Think of the opening and channel as the yin and yang of communications. Channels are the same old vehicles you always have to choose from (proposals, ads, PR, etc.) and they lack power without the yang of an opening, which increases the chance that your audience notices the message delivered. Together, the yin and the yang create a coherent, powerful whole. Think about when your donor needs you - not when you need your donor - and you'll be on the road to choosing the best channel for reaching that person.  "

Join the Parent Leadership Team!

Hello Parents,

We would like to personally invite you to join the parent leadership team for Circle of Parents. Participation is easy and accessible - you do not leave your house or pack up the kids. You simply need to be a participant in a local Circle group, no additional training needed.

We meet at least quarterly over the phone - toll free, no charge for phone calls. The team can suggest and participate in developing new programs or make improvements that meet the needs of parents and children. They also review parent surveys and oversee the nomination and selection process for annual awards. It is a great way to network with parents statewide and provide yet another level of support for one another.

For more information, contact Roxy Foster, staff to the Parent Leadership Team, at 651-523-0099 ext 118.

Throughout the summer of 2008, teams of grandparents and grandchildren will be walking, riding bikes, swimming, skating, golfing, and "just moving together" in order to have fun, boost physical fitness, and raise money for the Grandkidsandme Foundation. Set your own schedule with your grandchild.

For $20 you can register and get into motion with your grandchildren!  Our fun will culminate with the Walk for Children/Family Fun Day put on by Prevent Child Abuse MN at the St. Paul Midway Stadium on September 13.
