Dear Friends,

I hope that your 2008 fishing season has already gotten off to a good start.  Its been an interesting winter, some unexpected warm spells punctuated with some interesting winter weather....even an unexpected snowfall or two.  As I am putting together this newsletter today the high country is seeing some heavy snow, up to 10 inches in some of the NW counties bordering the Tennessee line.  How I would like to be there fishing right there in the midst of it!

Our winter season is coming to a close, and we are looking forward to a great spring and summer season ahead.  So go get that cup of coffee and join me as I fill you in on some of the things we will have going on this upcoming Spring and Summer season.

What the heck are those fish eating?......Tips on Fishing a Hatch

Know what that's like?  I think we've all been there, at least if we're honest.  A hatch.....what does that mean?  I mean folks leave work early, call in sick (I know no one has done that), take a entire week's vacation- - -all to be on the water when an insect emergence likely guarantees a river full of rising fish gorging themselves on flies.  If you are a fly fisherman, its your mecca, your magic moment, and a moment of truth also.  "Hatch" is both a noun and a verb.  As a noun it refers to the whole occurence or cycle of a portion of the insects in a river coming to the surface, as a verb it refers to the splitting open of the loose nymph or larval skin, and the adult fly crawling out of this skin and flying off- - - only to eventually shed its skin one more time, come back to the river, mate, then lay eggs in the river and die.  No matter how you describe it, as a fly fisherman it is what you hope for.  It is your magic moment, that is, if you are prepared for it.

One reason that the character of the fishing and the way the fish feed changes is because it offers to the fish the opportunity to become what we call selective.  By the dictionary, to become selective means to become highly specific in activity, effect, or choice- - -that is, the fish are all of a sudden locked into an insect, even a particular stage of an insect, and they ingore anything that does not appear to be the same as the bugs they are feeding on.  It doesn't mean that they are difficult, selective implies a choice.  Fish that are not feeding are often erroneously referred to as being selective.  They are not being selective, they simply are not feeding at the present time.  "Selective" only applies to fish that are actually feeding.

Some of the more common mayflies to our area that you might see hatch, and that you might see fish feeding on selectively, are Baetis , Blue QuillsHendricksons , Rotunda (sulphur), Invaria (sulphur), Dorothea (little Sulphur), Tiny Blue Wings / Pseudocloeon ,  and a Mahogany Dun (Isonychia) just to name a few.  Click here for a free printable hatch chart for the month of March.  These are mayflies, there are also midges, caddisflies, and stoneflies as well, but mayflies are a good place to focus as they are some of our more prominent hatches.  So, When it comes to matching a hatch, it might help to consider some of the tips if you are looking to raise your success rate........Learn more

Nat Greene Fly Fishers Annual Banquet....

March 29, 2008 marks the date for the annual spring Nat Greene Fly Fishers banquet and seminar.  This years guest speaker is Gary Borger, world renowned angler, fly tyer, and author.  His book Presentation in my opinion is the standard in fly  fishing books....simply outstanding. There is a seminar from 10am-2pm the day of the banquet, and the banquet is from 6:30-10:00pm.   For more information, click here .  You can also contact Laura Kennerly at 336.602.8020.

Roanoke River should Rockin' Soon........
Well, almost, not rock or rockfish but shad.  If the weather remains mild it won't be long before Shad will be in the river.  After that, the stripers are soon to follow.  You can follow the Roanoke River Fishing as it progresses via the North Carolina Wildlife Commission's site here .

FFF Southeastern Council Conclave at
Callaway Gardens, GA May 29-31,2008

Join me at Callaway Gardens for what promises to be another great conclave.  If you ever wanted to learn more about fly fishing, fly tying, and more you won't want to miss this year's Conclave.  Special guests Lefty Kreh and World Casting Champion Steve Rajeff will be on the program.  There will be three days of seminars, casting and fly tying, and some of the best tiers in the country will be demonstrating their craft at the Conclave.  For a list of tiers click here .  Both local bass and warmwater expert Anthony Hipps and I will be tying at the Conclave, we hope you can pay a visit.  Anthony's famous Soft Body Popper appeared in Fly Tyer Magazine and is also featured on Warm Water Fly Tyer.  It is literally one of the best opportunities to sit and get hundreds of new ideas and tips on all types of tying.  Attendees can also take part in some of the truly world class warmwater fishing for bass and bluegill- - - and some of these bluegill are the largest you'll find in  the lower 48.  For complete conclave information visit the FFF SEC's website  here .

TN TAILWATERS TRIP /South Holston & Watauga

May 13-15,2008

ESCATAWBA FARMS  JUNE 11, 2008
Join us for a great day of fishing, probably totally on the surface, as this trip the focus will be catching our fish on and sight casting with Terrestrials, ants, beetles, and inchworms.  Usually we get some great opportunities to sight cast to cruising fish and have them smash big dry flies like a big beetle, cricket,  or hopper in inches of water- - -most of the fish are in shallow enought water that when hooked they sound like a hog wallowing in the mud.  If I had to choose my favorite time to fish here with my favorite fly patterns, this trip would be it.
