Memories of a charmed school: the Château de Bècheville

Dear Alix,

Thank you for sending me your September newsletter.  I looked at the portrait of the Countess Daru.  I got to tell you that I went to school in the château de Bècheville, which was the residence of Comte Pierre Antoine Bruno Daru, Intendent general de la Grande Armée. The chateau is located in Les Mureaux in the Yvelines.

Invitation phote

When the Renault factory built high rises in town, the schools could not accommodate all of us.  The château de Bècheville by then belonged to the city so they made it into a school.  I was in the first class that attended school there.  I had a bedroom for classroom, all gilded with a beautiful mirror over the fireplace.  A marble staircase took us to the second floor.  The parc was so majestic filled with ancient trees.  How many dreams I had looking out the classroom windows...

The writer, Henry Beyle known as Stendhal, was a cousin of Pierre Daru.  It is said that he was inspired to write Le Rouge et le Noir there at the château. I always wonder if my classroom was were Stendhal stayed.  He was officier de dragons, then intendent militaire during the wars of the Revolution and Empire.  A portrait of him is at the château de Versailles.  That is being close to History.  Pierre Daru named his son Napoléon. The son completely changed the chateau interior to Second Empire Style.

So I was very happy to see La Comtesse Daru and to recall the wonderful time I spent in her residence.

Amities,

Nicole

Portrait of the Month - Nicole Jordan

Nicole Jordan was born in Bordeaux in south west France.  As aNicole 2 young girl, she lived in Pontonx-sur-Adour in the department des Landes neighboring the Basque region and very close to Spain. From her early childhood years, Nicole recalls vividly going to bullfights ("a cruel sport"), courses landaises, fandangos, and the delicious cuisine of the regions.  When she was ten, Nicole and her mother moved to Versailles outside of Paris.  Their apartment was only a block away from the magnificent château de Versailles, which became a magic playground for Nicole.

After her marriage, Nicole moved to Virginia and obtained a Bachelor of Sciences in Biology. She did research for a year, but being entrepreneurial and passionate about cooking, she decided to start a catering service, then later a rental business.

Nicole is active in community service working with young children and youth. This year she started a Farmers' Market.  Gardening is yet another one of her interests.  She is the president of the International Lilac Society and has served on the board of the American Hemerocallis Society. She is also skilled at fencing, and a member of the United States Fencing Association.

Alix and Nicole met at the Napoleonic Historical Society's annual conference in Chicago last year, and found many interests in common, particularly their shared passion for Napoleonic history and fond remembrances of south west France.  Nicole's two other favorite historical figures are Louis XIV and Thomas Jefferson.

Nicole lives in a hundred-year old house with seven dogs and four cats, all of them rescued, and a thousand-pound pig, named Ursula.  Her favorite painters are Manet and Salvador Dali... Favorite wines are Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and Bordeaux of course!

Best Tag Line gets a $100 Swan Ways' gift certificate

Since founding Swan Ways two years ago, I have thought long and hard about the right tag line for the vision that inspired me.  I am looking for a tag line that defines Swan Ways as a brand that denotes quality, refinement, and discrimination, and which appeals to those who value sophisticated styles with timeless fashion appeal and functionality.  The ideal tag line would also evoke the romantic inspiration of our name:  Empress Josephine, the First Empire, Proust, Kashmir, Persian miniatures.

Here are some ideas to get you started:
  • For every age, for every season
  • Timeless grace with a touch of royalty
  • The style of an empress, the grace of a swan
  • Comfort and grace, without compare
Here is how to enter:
  • Submit your suggestions to alix@swanways.com by        October 15.
  • The top five entries will be published in our November Newsletter and you will be asked to vote on them.
