Greetings!

We are so excited about new developments for 2011 and we want you, our faithful donors and supporters to be among the first to know. We have a new name and a new look and soon, a new location!

We are proud to announce The Women's Museum of California!  The new logo is above and with a little luck we will move the museum to Liberty Station in Point Loma this time next year!

As one of only five women's history museums in the country, we felt it was fitting to claim the right to be the Women's Museum of California.  Our tag line "preserving the past, inspiring the future" encompasses our long term mission to educate current and future generations about the experiences and contributions of women.

We could not have come this far without you.  We invite you to continue your support as we venture boldly into the future and establish ourselves as a regional museum of merit able to take our place next to the other wonderful museums in San Diego.

We hope you will include us in your year-end giving.  Your tax-deductible donation will assist us in reaching our financial goal for 2010.  (We are only a few thousand short of reaching that goal).

It's been a most rewarding year. We produced 40 events here at the museum for 988 people; participated in 41 community events for 14,204 attendees and took our travelling exhibit to 12 schools in front of 1,822 students. That's 18,900 people benefitting from the work of this museum.  All this with a small staff of one and half and a very enthusiastic group of loyal volunteers too numerous to count!

Thank you for being one of our loyal supporters.  We will be counting on you as we begin this new adventure.

May you enjoy very best of health and happiness in the New Year and beyond.

With much gratitude from the Women's Museum of California

The history of make-up
is as old as the history of mankind.  Before the turn of the 20th century, women wore little make-up in public.

During the 1920's New York beauty salons and the  cosmetics houses  put cosmetics  and compacts on every woman's status list.

Motion picture stars of the 1930's helped popularize the use of cosmetics. Compacts became larger, up to 5 inches in diameter.

American  engineers were late in their exploration of outer space because they were too busy inventing was to keep women's face powder inside the compact.

Miniaturization was also a challenge and a fascinating feature of vanity case design.

This collection of 147 items was donated in 2009 by San Diegan Clyde Newman and we are pleased to put them on exhibit for the public to appreciate.
