Dear Museum Supporter,

The Suffrage Day Parade and Ball is part of our Community Education Programming at the Women's History Museum and Educational Center.

Our mission to "inspire and educate present and future generations" goes hand in hand with the hands-on discovery present at this event. Many staff and volunteer hours goes into the planning and preparation and much fun is had. Last year's event sold out!

I hope you will join us in the celebration this historic event - the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920 which allowed American women to vote in Federal Elections.  And to remember that it was not so very long ago.

Best regards,
Ashley Gardner,
Museum Director

Dance on San Diego's finest dance floor!
real danceThe Balboa Park Club Ballroom
This is a 7,000 square foot span of 1930's hardwood floor... with not a pillar in sight.  Elegant, nostalgic, perfect for the sounds of the Sue Palmer Orchestra as led by Jimmy Woodard of the Swinging Kings. You will be transported to another time, another era.

Historical Reenactments of the 1930's
vintage carsThe 1930s meant Prohibition was still in effect and the only way to legally enjoy certain beverages was to have a medical prescription. (You just might find some available).  If not, be watchful for the San Diego Police (Historical Association) patrolling the vicinity in their 1934 Paddy Wagon ready to cart away any violators or to nab the likes of Bonnie and Clyde, should they darebonnie and clyde to show their faces at the event (as rumor has it, they will!)

The cars of the era had an elegance of their own.  The Vintage Car Club of San Diego will bring their best 30s treasures for photo ops and 1930s style ambiance.

And FDR's favorite dessert?  It will be revealed (and available for sale) in the "Journey to the Thirties"Bake Sale and accompanying Cook Book of 1930s' recipes.  Mock apple pie anyone?
Have fun and win prizes at the historical Dance Marathon and Costume Contests
bikers The 1930s was an elegant era...somewhat in reaction to the silliness of the "Roaring Twenties".

Think Erte and Art Deco lines and designs.  Hair in waves close to the head and men wearing fedoras all the time.  Even the gangsters were styling!

Dance Marathons were all the rage starting in the twenties and culminating in the 30's when they were banned as immoral by many social groups.

Ours will be only for fun, prizes and playful competition. And to remember the past.
