The Governor Came To Town! Granholm signs Cottage Industry Bill at the GH Center
|
| Last Thursday word came through that a special visitor would be at the Growing Hope Center on Monday. Governor Granholm came to our place to sign a bill (introduced by local Representative Pam Byrnes) that we had pushed for, allowing certain food-safe items to be prepared in home kitchens and legally sold at farmers' markets. The Cottage Industry Bill was signed into law on July 12 and 12:59 pm to a crowd of over 75 people, including news cameras, local dignitaries, and others. We were so pleased to have the presence of Rep Byrnes, Rep Warren, Rep Barnett, EMU President Martin, Mayor Schreiber, reps from MIFMA, and so many more for the pomp and circumstance. More importantly, we are so excited that this law takes away barrier for entrepreneurs to get started in their food based business, and allows growers to supplement their incomes with products like pies and jams. Press coverage on annarbor.com and WDIV, as well as Michigan Radio & WEMU, among others!
