 Peter Menzel, the co-author of 'Hungry Plant, What the World Eats,' will discuss how globalization, migration, and rising affluence are affecting the diets of communities around the World. The public symposium will consider different preventative practices to maintain good health and the need for culture to be considered as a factor to accessing nutritious food. Dr. Kim Eagle, a Professor of
Internal Medicine and Director of the U-M Cardiovascular Center, will speak on behalf of
Project Healthy Schools. A program that works with middle school students to help them choose healthy foods that will prevent diseases like diabetes. Hungy Planet - Healthy Schools is being held tonight and is FREE: October 7th from 7PM - 8:30PM at the Ark. This event will include a book signing
and copies of Hungry Planet will be available for purchase. Growing Hope will be tabling; be sure to stop by and say hello!

CSGDI: Community & School Garden Development Institute INFORMATION SESSIONS Thursday, October 8th Thursday, November 12th

Please join us in a highly interactive discussion on how to start and sustain a community garden! The CSGDI Information Session will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church
We will cover identifying resources, recruiting volunteers, expanding your
ideas of what a garden is/could be, and making it sustainable
throughout the season. You will have a chance to learn new ideas as
well as process how it went for you this year. This is a great
opportunity to start recruiting members to attend CSGDI: Community and
School Garden Development Institute, next held in January of 2010!
St.
Andrew's Episcopal Church participated in Faith and Food, a
collaborative program of Growing Hope, Food Gatherers, & the Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice, that helps faith-based gardens grow for donation to Food Gatherers to put it in the hands that need fresh produce! Learn more
about this program and tour the St. Andrew's Garden during the
Information Session.

Faith and Food successfully organized over a dozen
congregational gardens growing healthy, fresh, local produce for low-income
families! How did it go? What did we learn? How can we continue to

The meeting will begin with a tour of the Gathering Farm, followed by
refreshments and a presentation. We will discuss the pilot year, what we have

No need to be, because the WINTER MARKET will continue inside at the Corner Brewery four more times! Mark your calendars to do your holiday shopping. Do you have some yummy hardy greens, beets and carrots growing in your cold frame, or a hoophouse full of produce? If you do, please apply to be a vendor at this market that will occur on November 10 & 24, and December 8 & 22. Space is limited so not all vendors are guaranteed a spot. The annual Michigan Community & School Gardener Networking meeting is being held in Ypsi this year! It's an opportunity to hear about the innovative community & school gardening
work currently taking place around Michigan and Ohio and networks among gardeners. The
day will include lunch, opportunities to learn, network and share
experiences. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos, displays, or
other ways to share about their gardens and their community. Come to
share, come to learn, and come to be inspired by friends and colleagues around the state!
