Meet the Vendor: L & L Farms
L and L Farms PictureLois and Leona Tyler are sisters and farming partners originally from Florida. Lois says that she started farming when she was just a kid there, and years and years later (more than 60 years in Michigan!) she is still farming. The farm is called L & L Farms and is located in New Boston, MI. They have been selling with the Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers' Market for two years every week their produce is in season. Lois says that she sells her produce to bring in extra income to help her family. She finds her fellow vegetable vendors to be nice and she enjoys talking with people about fun veggies!

Leona says that she grows kids as well as vegetables. She's a mother of nine, grandmother of 11, and great-grandmother of more than she can count! Leona loves going into the field when the plants go into bloom. She loves purple and the purple flowers that grow on peas.

L & L's number one selling produce item is green beans, and they are also one of Lois' favorite things to grow (although she says all vegetables are her favorite!). When asked if Lois has a favorite recipe she says, "No! I cook with my mind." We were able to gather a recipe from her mind, though, that centers around beets and green beans. Look for these items among other beautiful produce items (like watermelon) at their booth each Tuesday!

Remove the greens from the beets (these are also edible and can be steamed/sauteed and tossed with butter). Wash all dirt from the beets and place into a pot of boiling water. Boil until beets are tender when poked with a fork. Once the beets are cooked and slightly cooled, rub the skin off the beets with your hands. Add steamed or boiled green beans, chopped onions, mayonnaise, and pinches of sugar, salt, and pepper.

Lois also recommends eating beets boiled as above and tossed with a little sugar and vinegar. Delectable!
The Downtown Ypsilanti Winter Market at the Corner Brewery!
2008 Winter Market
The Corner Brewery will be hosting this years Downtown Ypsilanti Winter Farmers' Market! The market will be held every other week in November and December, starting on November 10th, from 3-7pm. Applications for this market are available on the Growing Hope website and are due October 20th. We currently are actively seeking vendors for meat (so send potential vendors our way!), and expect to have diverse offerings of produce, jams, syrup, apples and cider, honey, eggs, cheeses, baked goods and breads, as well as some crafts. The Cornery Brewery has graciously agreed to open an hour earlier then normal on these market days, and will have happy hour for the entire market time! Come experience local and help create an environment that will foster an extended growing season for our vendors!

*The market will allow some non-local produce due to current availability, but all products will be labeled as such.
Tour de Fresh was September 15th!
tour de fresh image

Growing Hope hosted Tour de Fresh, the 3rd annual Ypsi-area garden & sustainable food system tour on Tuesday, September 15th from 5-8:30 pm!  We were able to see what so many partners in the Growing Hope Community have done. We were inspired to garden, be involved in urban agriculture, and were able to witness other ways folks are growing food for themselves & neighbors!  Thanks to all who were involved in sharing their gardens!
Who runs the market?  Our Ypsilanti Farmer's Market Community Advisory Board gives input to an executive committee including Growing Hope, MSU-Extension, Washtenaw County Public Health, and the Ypsilanti Food Co-op.  Growing Hope manages the Tuesday market.  Do you want to get involved?  Do you have something to sell?  Call Growing Hope at 734-786-8401 or email to sarah@growinghope.net and learn how you can join the effort! www.growinghope.net.  Thanks for financial support from Washtenaw Steps Up (through the Michigan Dept of Community Health & Washtenaw County Public Health), Growing Hope, MSU-Extension, and other partners.
