Featured recipe: CHIMICHURRI SAUCE
Featuring Freshly Harvested Parsley!
Ingredients: - 1 large bunch of fresh flat leaf parsley, washed, stemmed, and dried - 6 cloves of garlic, peeled - 2 tablespoons minced onion - 1 small carrot, grated - 5 tablespoons distilled white vinegar or more to taste - 5 tablespoons water - 1 teaspoon sea salt - 1 TB oregano - 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper flakes - 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper - 1 cup extra virgin olive oil
Directions:
Finely
chop the parsley and garlic in a food processor. Add the onion, carrot,
vinegar, water, salt, oregano, pepper flakes and black pepper and
process. Add the oil in a thin stream. Do not over process; the
chimichurri should be a bit coarse. Correct the seasoning, adding salt
or vinegar to taste.
Suggestions for using this sauce include on grilled meats, veggies, or seafoods, or as a spreading on bruschetta with a topping of goat cheese, nut butters, or tapenades.

Credit Cards and EBT/Food Stamps Accepted!

EBT, Credit Cards, Cash, Project Fresh & Prescription for Health accepted all market days! Go to the Ypsilanti Food Co-op table to run your card, then spend your colorful wooden tokens with any of our vendors.
We also offer Market Dollars,

gift for someone, to give to your kids as an allowance, or for use as incentives to your
employees if you own a business! These do a double duty by supporting local farmers & business owners, and helping someone eat and/or shop healthier! |
The Market Relies on Volunteers Every Week-- Will you help?
|
Volunteers are needed to do demos, play music, and distribute educational materials between 2 and 7 pm every Tuesday.
Do you enjoy sharing skills for making kimchi, sauerkraut, or seasonal recipes? Are you a dancer, hoola hooper, or drummer? We'd love to appreciate your talents!

Featured vendor this week: Growing Hope's Farmer Dan
|
Dan Bair is a full-time, volunteer staff member for Growing Hope. After completing his Organic Farming Certificate at Michigan State University, Dan joined Growing Hope to become our first ever Farm Manager! Growing Hope's new farm, the Growing Hope Center, is located just 3 blocks west of the Farmers' Market on Michigan Ave.
With Dan's expertise in hoop house farming, Growing Hope is able to grow food year-round, and will continue to provide produce at the market earlier than it is normally available. Dan explains, "In the winter, the hoop house is primarily used to grow leafy vegetables and root crops. It also helps to extend the growing season of crops. For example, tomatoes can be planted one month earlier, allowing them to be sold at the market earlier."
Growing Hope's new Market Apprentice Joe Lucas interviewed Farmer Dan earlier this week. Here are a few of the questions Dan answered:
Joe: What are your goals and plans for the Farm? Dan: I plan to develop more relationships with local stores and restaurants that would like to sell and use food from our hoop house. Our produce is already being served at Beezy's Cafe, and sold at the Ypsi Food Co-op, and I would like to get more fresh, local food out there.
Joe: Are you optimistic about the direction that the local/organic food movement is headed? Dan: I am, personally. In the past two years I have changed my professional direction to food production, particularly for the local Market. I don't look at the local food movement as something trendy that will dissolve. I see it as more of a cultural shift; a change in people's deeper values.
Dan is at the Growing Hope booth every Tuesday during the Downtown Ypsi Farmers' Market. Get your local veggies and herbs early this year, and ask him more about season extension!
