New Market Money!
|
Have you seen our new market money? To make credit cards and EBT easier to use, we're introducing market tokens! Go to the Ypsilanti Food Co-op table to run your card, then spend your colorful wooden tokens with any of our vendors!
We also have "Market Dollar" tokens available for purchase. Business owners, buy them as rewards for your employees. Parents, give them to your kids as allowance. You'll know you're supporting local farmers and helping someone eat healthier - and that's worth more than a wooden nickel!

Our third season!
|
 Friends and Market Shoppers, The
Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers' Market is open and thriving for its third
year! Like the seedlings our vendors are tending, the market is
growing- putting down roots and unfurling its leaves and getting ready
for a fruitful season!
We have a spectacular season planned- all
of our favorite vendors are back, and some new vendors will be joining
us. We've recruited musicians to entertain you as you shop, and we're
designing some exciting activities - as if buying fresh, local food
directly from the farmers who grow it isn't fun enough already!
This
is the first newsletter of the season - look for them every two weeks.
They'll let you know what vegetables and fruits are coming into season, so you can
plan your shopping, and provide a recipe to give you serving ideas.
We'll also use the newsletters to keep you up to date on coming events
and help you get to know some of our vendors.
We're looking forward to seeing you this and every Tuesday!
Would you help us spread the word about the DYFM? Forward this newsletter to a friend! Did you friend forward you this newsletter? Thank him or her - then click on "Join Our Mailing List" below!

Featured vendor this week: Brenda Jo Domosle Brenda Jo's Organic Foods, LLC
|
The Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers' Market is happy to welcome a new vendor this year, Brenda Jo Domosle of Brenda Jo's Organic Foods, LLC. Brenda Jo distributes local and regional natural foods, such as Michigan-raised, grass-fed beef and buffalo, raw milk cheeses, free-range pork, poultry, and eggs, local honey, homemade pasta and tortillas, and Michigan tart cherry juice concentrate. She runs her business from Dundee, Michigan, but the vibrant community and social mission of the Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers' Market convinced her to try her first farmers' market.
Brenda Jo's business emerged out of the need to feed her family well. Ten years ago, Brenda Jo discovered that pasteurized cow's milk had worsened her daughter's asthma. Looking for an affordable source of healthy, dairy-free foods, she began buying large quantities of natural foods and sharing the costs with other families - eventually forming a "buying club" called Family First that grew into a health food distribution business. She changed the name of her business to Brenda Jo's Organic Foods this spring to more accurately reflect her products and purpose, but she still supplies monthly boxes ("pickups") of healthy foods to over 30 families in southeast Michigan. Her beef and buffalo meats come from the Macritchie family of Pickney, Michigan, and she sources cheeses from a number of local farms. Her neighbors supply honey, her tofu comes from Rosewood Soy Products in Ann Arbor, and she picks up greens from the Goetz Farm in Manchester. "It takes a lot of behind-the-scenes organizing and ordering to get it all here at one time," she says, "but it happens month after month." Brenda Jo invites her market customers to join her buying club - send her an email at luckydog66@peoplepc.com - "Just don't stop coming to the Market!"
Brenda Jo's (now asthma-free!) daughter and son will join her at the market once school lets out, selling locally-bottled spring water. They are looking forward to spending the money they make on tasty baked goods from the other DYFM vendors. These "Made in Michigan" kids are both all-star baseball players, and when she's not working, Brenda Jo enjoys coaching them on the field. Brenda Jo is also a certified nutritional consultant and personal trainer, so if you're looking for healthy food, you know you can trust this energetic, dynamic vendor. Find her at the end of the row, and don't let her small table mislead you - she has plenty of great foods for sale!

The Market Relies on Volunteers Every Week-- Will you help?
|
Volunteers are essential to making our market work. By volunteering, you can get to know the market and feel a part of the community!
Downtown Farmers' Market: On Tuesdays, volunteers are needed for shifts between 12:30 and 7:00 pm, and include set up, signage, transporting market supplies, helping other vendors, helping seniors cross the street, and counting people at the market. Volunteers are also needed to do demos, play music, and hand out signs.
Choose a shift that works for you and contact Growing Hope at 734-786-8401 to volunteer once or every week!
