 AABC Alumni Society LogoGreetings!

Greetings from The All-American Boys Chorus!

The month of May has 31 days, but here at the AABC it flies by as if it were the shortest month of the year.

Our Concert in the Park! spring concert was a fantastic production.  Kudos to Wesley and the Concert Chorus for a superb job--and to our staff members for putting it all together.

If you missed the spring concert, there's a great opportunity in May to catch the boys in concert.  Monday, May 28th, on Memorial Day weekend promises to be a fun concert in Thousand Oaks, CA.  Bring friends, family-and a picnic!

Drum roll please . . . the alumnus who was the first to correctly guess the place and year of our April "photo memory" is . . . Andrew Petracca ('06)!  The place was the Bakersfield Business Conference, and it was in October 2001.  Congratulations Andrew; please let us know if you'd like two VIP tickets to our December 16th Christmas concert or a set of all five AABC CDs.

Please send us your comments, suggestions and, most important of all, updates on what's going on with YOU so we can share it with fellow alums!

Duncan Ballard ('04), Christopher Maze ('04), and Andrew Wong ('03) competed in Opera Pacific's 17th annual Laila S Conlin vocal competition on May 12th. Duncan won 2nd Place, Andrew won 3rd Place, and Christopher won honorable mention.  Way to go guys!

Tom O'Toole ('86) and wife Hillarie currently live in Western Massachusetts.  Both have been singing opera professionally for the past couple of years.  Tom appeared most recently in Opera Boston's critically acclaimed production of Kurt Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.  Other recent appearances include Escamillo in Carmen (Granite State Opera), Gazella in Lucrezia Borgia (Opera Boston), and Alcindoro in La Boheme (Sarasota Opera).

Phil Rios ('74) is an engineer living in Tucson, AZ and working for the Raytheon Company.  He manages a team of 14 engineers who produce logistics products for weapon systems used in the Gulf.  His eldest daughter just had a baby--so is Phil our first AABC granddad?

Paul Rios ('73) just finished his Master's degree in Horticulture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is teaching.

AABC Alumni Bus Fund

$5 a month will help keep us "on the road"

In an effort to keep up with ever-rising costs of operating and maintaining our bus, we've started an Alumni Bus Fund.

Even though having our own AABC bus is cheaper than renting busses, it's still a big part of our budget.  We have to pay for fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs and drivers.

Each year bus costs go up.  Fuel has gone from $1.50 to $3.00 a gallon.  Insurance is also up along with the cost of maintenance (repair facilities keep increasing labor rates).

We got to thinking about the bus costs, and came up with the idea that if each AABC alumnus donates $5 a month to our Bus Fund, it would be an enormous help with the increasing costs of the bus.  And yet $5 a month is really pretty affordable.  It's about the cost of a frappuccino at Starbucks, a Big Mac meal at McDonald's, or a few songs from I-tunes.

Multiplied by all of our alumni, $5 a month would be a HUGE help to the Chorus.

The problem is the 80/20 rule.  If AABC alumni are like members of other organizations, then only 20% will give the $5 a month - and that won't be enough to meet the increasing costs of the bus.

But we don't think AABC alumni are like members of other organizations.  We're confident that having ridden on the AABC bus many times during your years as a singer, you understand the value and importance of the bus to the Chorus's success.

Sending $5 a month to our Bus Fund is a great way for alumni to support the Chorus.  By making sure our boys, now and in the future, will always have a safe, reliable and FUN way to get to and from concerts and go on tours.

You can send your donation monthly, or give it all at once ($60 for the year).

The easiest way is to go to the AABC website: www.taabc.org, click on the DONATE button at the top right of the home page and donate via PayPal.  OR email Tony Manrique at a.manrique@taabc.org and he'll send you a set of pledge envelopes.

It'll be marvelous to tell our boys that it's the alumni of the Chorus, the guys that came before them and who shaped the AABC into the great organization it is today, who are still "riding along" with us on the bus to each concert!

Our thanks to the following allumni who have already made donations or pledges to the Alumni Bus Fund:

Gabe Ayala ('97), Juan Ayala ('92), Aaron Cassaro ('95), Kevin Gustafson ('97), Tony Manrique ('72), Fr. Bob Pipta ('82), Scott Rogers ('94), Greg Smet ('72), Matthew Uyesugi ('89), Mark Williams ('87)
