How the Affordable Care Act Will Help Direct Care Workers

Affordable Care Act title pageThrough the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), which was upheld as constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 28, the United States is finally making health care accessible and affordable for millions of Americans--including hundreds of thousands of direct care workers. "This is indeed a victory for health care workers everywhere," says Genevieve Gipson, director of the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants.

Bill would protect home health services access under Medicare:  On June 29, Representative James McGovern (D-MA) introduced HR 6059, the Home Health Care Access Protection Act of 2012. The bill, which is co-sponsored by Representative Walter Jones (R-NC), seeks to protect Medicare beneficiaries' access to home health services under the Medicare program.

House prepares to vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act:  On July 9, the U.S. House of Representatives Rules Committee met to discuss efforts to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). The House is expected to vote on a repeal on July 11, but even if passed, it will not be voted on in the Senate or signed into law by President Obama. Contact your representatives today to urge them not to repeal the ACA. Email your representative or call (202) 224-3121 and ask the operator to connect you to your representative's office.
Tell DOL You Respect Home Care Workers
The rule proposed by the U.S. Department of Labor last December to extend Fair Labor Standards Act protection to home care workers is an important step toward giving home care workers the respect they deserve. DCA deeply appreciates the efforts DOL has made to right this longstanding wrong, and all the work done by our members and allies to help champion this landmark rule. But it's not over 'til it's over, and the rule has not yet been enacted.

If you haven't already signed our petition asking DOL to enact the rule right away, please sign the petition now. Our government needs to know that home care workers can't wait any longer for this basic sign of respect.
