We have an exciting new charity project that the shop is participating in.
I'm going to post Kristi's email because it explains best the reason for this new project...
In some recent conversations with my husband (who works for Lansing
police if you haven't seen his mug on tv all too often! I see him
everyday and tv is supposed to be an escape!), I asked him if they have
things for kids when they do drug raids, or house stops, or when
detectives have to interview children in cases that are too painful to
even fathom. He said that officers used to keep stuffed animals in
their trunks but with the economy these days, they are usually not
there. He recalls times when he was a detective that they usually had
run out of items or they would appeal to officers to bring in their own
kids stuffed toys. There were times when he thought it would be a
great opportunity to appeal to some organization to make this happen so
they weren't scampering around. My first thought is KNITTERS!
Knitters can make things and they are always so generous with their
time and skills for charity
So, we're knitting and crocheting Teddy Bears!
The details...
Who are these for: The Lansing Police Department to use to comfort kids when they get pulled into a bad situation.
What pattern do I use: Any bear pattern is fine. There is a site that has links to many
free patterns & we're getting in several books of bear patterns at the shop. I also have a couple of free patterns that I really like printed out in the shop.
What yarn do I need to use: Anything that is washable, so washable wools, cottons, or synthetic yarns. I have a small amount of yarn that has been donated for charity knitting in mostly neutral color acrylic blends. These would be great to knit bears from.
When is the deadline: This is a long term project... we have scheduled 2 pickups a year (unless we get buried in bears! Then we'll be sure to get them to Kristi sooner). This year the dates are June 12 & Dec 11.
Our goal is to collect 50 bears before the June 12th pick up. That's only 10 bears a month, so I know we can do it!
