This week SUITE New York celebrates work by a selection of acclaimed female designers. Icons of the past, present and future, all of these women have created products designed to spark visual, intellectual and artistic interest.

APU
Finnish/German designer Hanna Ehlers designed the Apu occasional tables in 2010. An homage to her lineage, Ehlers gives her designs Finnish names with Apu being the Finnish word for Help. A perfect name, considering these versatile tables are a useful hybrid of side-table, plate and vase ready to assist in any space.

Bergere
Patricia Urquiola is a design powerhouse with a resume of collaborations, education and design that is awe-inspiring. Her Bergere chair grew out of a specific demand for an updated version of the French Bergere, or shepherdess chair, of the early 1700s. Known as the "armchair par excellence" Bergere is inspired by the traditional form with updates such as a removable slipcover and two incline levels: one for conversation and one for repose. It is also just plain comfortable.

GJ Chair
Grete Jalk was a woman in a man's world and today remains one of the major exponents of Danish Modern Design from 1950s and 1960s. Her GJ Chair, or She Chair, was designed in 1963 and is regarded as Jalk’s best-known work. Expressive, sculptural and technically daring, the GJ chair today is manufactured in the same factory and with the same tools as its inception almost fifty years ago.

Rina
Barbara Maggiolo's design background focused on graphics, image consulting and installations. In 2002 after joining Vistosi corporate, her fascination with Murano glass manufacturing techniques developed into creative experimentation, ultimately resulting in Maggiolo designing the Rina collection. Crystal clear blown-glass spherical diffusers speckled with white murrhine follow the designer’s speculation that this material is “capable of creating captivating atmospheres.”
