SUITE New York is proud to introduce the 1.3 collection designed by Kihyun Kim. A recent graduate from London’s Royal College of Art, Kim was awarded the prestigious Design of the Year Award from the Design Museum of London for his 1.3 Chair.

1.3 Chair
The 1.3 chair, which is arguably the world’s lightest wooden chair, was developed for Kim’s MA Design Product graduate project and has been put in to production by German manufacturer, Zeitraum.

The motivation behind the design was to make a chair as light as possible. Kim explains his process as “based on reinterpreting craft techniques combined with developing alternatives to industrial methods.”

Originally realized in balsa wood (the lightest hardwood) 1.3 weighs a feathery 1.28kg/2.8lbs (less than Gio Ponti’s 1957 Superleggera.) Now available in oak, ash and American walnut, 1.3 is a space saving shape that is visually delicate by way of fine contours and a “wafer-thin” seat that seems to float in air.

1.3 Stool
Two stools in differing heights have also been developed for the 1.3 family following the same shape, style and innovation as the 1.3 Chair. An ensemble ideal for small restaurants, cafes, bistros or urban living, the 1.3 collection packs major punch in a lightweight package.
