There’s a new kid in town! Though by new, we mean very very old. SUITE New York now carries Vistosi, a Murano glass lighting company whose origins in the craft date back to the 17th century. Family owned and operated for over 350 years, Vistosi was acquired by the Moretti family in 1990. The Morettis took the company’s archive of classic designs and melded them with fresh works from renowned contemporary designers and architects. The result: an eclectic and carefully-curated collection of contract or residential lighting that we are pleased to present as our Item of the Week.

For centuries, glass-masters considered themselves the only artists to possess the ability to design Murano glass. In the 1960s, Vistosi revolutionized the idea of separating design from production by inviting great architects and designers, such as Gae Aulenti, Vico Magistretti and Angelo Mangiarotti, to collaborate with the brand. It is a company tradition that continues today.

Diadema

The Diadema collection is one such collaboration. Designed in 2005 by Romani Saccani Architetti Associati, its structure is comprised of long glass rods in clear or topaz crystal. The rods are attached to the chrome structure by sturdy clips. Named after a genus of long-spined sea urchins, Diadema has won multiple awards including the 2006 Golden Compass Award from the ADI Design Index. Available in a variety of applications and sizes.

Bissa & Bissona

Vistosi continues to carry work from its archives, including designs from its most recent family owner, the late Luciano Vistosi. His Bissa / Bissona glass table lamps exemplify his desire to “play with the capacity of glass to be penetrated by light.” Its youthful and amoebic structure eminates light from a carefully hidden opening under the nose. Its light bends and gradiates downward at the bend. Available in two sizes.

Rina

Venetian-born Barbara Maggiolo has Murano glass in her blood. With a career that began in brand and spacial design, Maggiolo’s fascination with classic glass-blowing techniques turned her sights toward designing for Vistosi. Her Rina collection consists of clear crystal spheres speckled with white murrhine. Available in multiple sizes and applications, each sphere in the collection houses one to six bulbs in its center, depending on size.
