"Most people just stared unbelievingly and thought we'd made a terrible mistake,” said Birgit Gammerler, founder of Zeitraum.

Cena Table
Gammerler was speaking of the 1991 International Furniture Fair in Cologne, at which Zeitraum exhibited its minimalist wood pieces for the first time. Her booth held nothing but beech furniture hand-finished with oil, “no color, no varnish, no extras.” Elsewhere the fair bustled with “shrill sodas, chairs with bare metal backs and cool plastic refrigerators.”

Side Storage
Gammerler stuck to her (wooden) guns. An industrial designer, her desire was to honor wood with clean minimalistic designs. Before ‘eco-friendly’ was the buzz word it is today, it was her prescient goal to use only sustainable hardwoods and chemical-free finishes. Gammerler returned to the simpler modes of construction, using wooden joints and natural bone-glue instead of metal screws and resin glue.

Simple Hi
Fifteen years later, Zeitraum is experiencing extraordinary international success. Recently winning multiple design awards, the company continues its vision of creating masterpieces in solid wood. Unchanging in her confidence toward company and product, Gammerler notes, “we were simply ahead of our time.”
