The problem with most sleeper sofas is that they are clunky, unwieldy, and downright unattractive. Not so with Slaapbank. This sofa, designed by the legendary Martin Visser, makes you want to invite out-of-town guests to come stay for a while.

Slaapbank

A lover of all things simple and functional, the Dutch designer created Slaapbank (meaning sleep couch) in 1960. The sofa has been in production ever since, with the only change being the optional loose armrest which was added in 1988. A simple movement converts the sofa into a sofa bed.

Slaapbank exemplifies Visser's strong preference for craft-built furniture that has an industrial aesthetic. He loves to make simple furniture using as little material as possible, but with the clearest possible shape. With legs of chrome-plated metal, the sofa's body is upholstered in graded-in fabrics and leather or COM/COL. The armrest can match or provide contrast in a different fabric. Indeed, the sofa is so elegant on its own that no sleepover visitors are needed.
