Congratulations Go Green Website!
We are thrilled to report that in May our website reached over 2 million hits!  We are constantly working to keep our website a user friendly and informative place.  To this end we've added two new pages to the "private" section of the site.  Once you log in you will now see that there is a "Website Instructions" page and an "Environmental Resources" page.  The Resources page lists resources by general and state.  This page is still under construction for some states but should be completed for all US states by the end of June!

Please let us know how we can continue to keep our site user friendly and packed with information.  Please send us any ideas you may have, we love to hear from our readers!

Show Your Soul Partners with the Go Green Initiative
Jill & Kate - Go Green GoddessesGo Green is getting a makeover! GGI has partnered with Show Your Soul for the cool new Eco T-shirt. The good news: it's made of organic cotton, recycled polyester, and natural rayon for an amazing tee you'll look and feel good in (we definitely do!). The better news: 10 percent of the proceeds will go directly to the GGI, with discounts for registered schools. Go green in style!

Inspired by Bono's Red Campaign, the idea for Show Your Soul was born on a treadmill. A few minutes into a 30-minute run, Jenny Cox, Owner and Founder of Show Your Soul along with her husband Bill, was becoming bored fast and sought motivation from the sea of T-shirts bobbing up and down in front of her. Then it hit her -- wouldn't it be great if she could give and receive soulful inspiration simply through the clothes that we wear? Words like "believe," "hope," and "imagine" evoke tenderness in all of us - and now we can feel good wearing them and sharing them with others. Jenny and Bill also made a commitment to use their success to help others - and show their souls! - by donating 10 percent of all proceeds to children's charities.

Please visit their site at www.showyoursoul.net and order your new GGI Eco Tee!
Marathoner Raises Money and Awareness for the Go Green Initiative!
Hello to everyone at the Go Green Initiative!  My name is Doug Cassaro.  On June 9th, I will start training for my 2nd marathon, the Chicago Marathon. The Chicago
Marathon is on October 12th and I will be following anDoug's Picture 18-week training program to prepare myself for the race.  However, my 2nd marathon will be a much different experience.  I'm running the marathon to raise money for this remarkable organization.  Jill and I have had many conversations over the past couple months and we are really excited to be working together to continue to draw more attention to the GGI!

The main reason I wanted to run for the GGI is because of what I see every time I'm out for a training run...TRASH!  I'm amazed at the amount of trash I see along the streets as I'm running.  The lack of respect some people show the planet we live on really upsets me.  As times change, I'm trying to change as well to become more eco-friendly.  Now, I have this amazing opportunity to do this by spreading the word about the GGI!  I'm eager to begin my training and I hope to get all the support I can!

Talk to you again soon!

-Doug

School News from Washington, DC
The Hope Community Charter School in Washington, D.C. is a small school with big spirit! The whole school joined together last Fall to make their campusfleece jackets more beautiful and more environmentally responsible. Each class formed a team to adopt a section of the school to take care of, create a banner with a slogan about going Green, and keep track of their class' recycling. Each team is in a competition to see who will win for the best slogan and area adoption, and the winners get the best motivator of all - pizza! To check out what they've done, click here.
GGI Principle #3: Educate
EducateWhen it comes to the environment, nobody can be left out of the process. We are all interconnected, by the Earth and by each other, and it is our job to teach our children well. When schools take the initiative - the Go Green Initiative! - to involve parents, teachers, custodians, and school officials along with the students, we come closer to our goal of creating environmentally responsible communities.

Environmental education isn't just for kids. Parents should be as active in their child's environmental education as they are in reading, writing, and 'rithmatic. Educating parents by sending them information and offering training in things like recycling and waste management teaches kids to be environmentally responsible in all aspects of life.

We've all had great teachers who changed our lives. Knowledge is power, after all! Offering teachers chances for training in environmental topics will allow them to mold their classroom atmosphere in a way that will promote environmental stewardship.

The success of any Go Green program will be based on how well it is carried out, which makes custodians a critical part of the team. They have a direct connection to the way that the school's efforts in recycling or waste diversion will turn out, and have valuable and realistic insights on implementation.

Environmental leadership, like all kinds of leadership, begins at the top. Principals, superintendents, and council members need to be involved in setting goals for the year, and being held accountable to their progression.

When all the pieces are put together, going Green is less of a puzzle. Better still, we're teaching our kids the benefits of working together for a common goal. Everybody works and everyone wins - sounds like a sweet deal to us!
