School Board Selects Superintendent

Dr. Marian Strauss is Named
SuperintendentThe Pine Tree ISD school board formally hired Marian Strauss as the district's superintendent Tuesday, November 3rd.  The board unanimously voted at a special meeting to hire Strauss, former superintendent of the Wimberly Independent School District and first female leader for the district.  The board announced Strauss as the district's lone superintendent finalist at an October board meeting, but state law required the board to wait 21 days before hiring her. Hiring Strauss was the only item on the meeting's agenda.  "We are so unbelievably pleased to have you here," said Gil Gillam, board president.

Advanced Placement Award Winners Honored

Students Recognized at Board Meeting
Twenty-three (23) students at Pine Tree High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. Pine Tree High School Principal Cindy Gabehart reported an increase in the number of students taking Advanced Placement exams.  They had 93 students to take 196 AP exams in May 2009, which reflects an increase of 45 additional exams since last year.

Gabehart presented each student a certificate of achievement before the PT School Board at November's monthly meeting.  "We are very proud that the numbers increased this year," said Gabehart.  "The students who enroll in Advanced Placement classes are taking advantage of an important component in preparing for college rigor." Read more.

Pine Tree Students Collected Most Coats for Kids
"Coats for Kids" is an annual community project that collects and distributes warm winter coats to eligible children and teenagers in the Gregg County area. This year, the third and fourth graders took the trophy for collecting the most coats!  Because they won this year, they celebrated with a ceremony where they received the traveling trophy.  The Intermediate School Campus will be home to a traveling trophy donated by A#1 Trophies & Plaques until the next COATS FOR KIDS Classroom Challenge coming in Fall, 2010.
