June 2012

Greetings!

The Riverview Risers program was awarded the Amos Willcox Award for Professional Services in the Field of Aging.  The Risers program began several years ago as a way to provide meaningful activities for the most cognitively impaired of our resident population.

The program is run by Karen Vathis, 14 years at Riverview Estates, a Certified Activities Aide (AAC) who is trained in the use of the Snoozelen equipment and Jackie McCall, CNA, who has been working at Riverview Estates for 10 years.  Every weekday morning those staff members assist the nine or ten Riverview Risers to our Risers room, a quiet area, off the unit, with little foot traffic going by.  Two or three days a week Gloria Sanderlein, a local community volunteer, joins them for the day.

The Riverview Risers are physically frail, wheelchair or geri-chair bound residents with severe cognitive impairment.  The programming for the Risers engages all of their senses.  Some of these programs include arts & crafts, physical exercise programs, painting, spa treatments, aroma therapy, storytelling, music, beanbag toss, Snoozelen and many more.   These residents respond in a very positive way to the Risers program.  Many thrive on the individualized attention, compassion and the wonderful care provided by the team.  We have seen improvements in mood and weight as a result of this program.

As recipient of the Amos Willcox Award for Professional Services in the Field of Aging, we will use the award to create a therapeutic garden that will give our Risers a window on a larger universe, emotionally and physically.  The "seed" money will allow our Riverview Risers program to "grow" to the next level; it will "nurture" our residents and we will see them "blossom" into more than they or others believe they can be.  This garden will provide hope, enjoyment and a sense of satisfaction to our residents and the staff.

Bake Sale

Riverview Estates will be selling baked goods along the river.  The bake sale will be held every Wednesday night on our front lawn at 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  So come on down to the river, enjoy the Riverton Yacht Club sailboat races, a stroll along the river and some homemade baked goods.  All monies raised will benefit the lives of the residents.

"Ask Jane" Director of Social Services

Dear Jane,

I have diabetes and need insulin. Will Original Medicare cover my insulin?

Signed, Paula (NJ)

Dear Paula,

Yes, Medicare covers insulin and other diabetes supplies. Insulin is covered by Part B or Part D, depending on how you inject the insulin into your body.

If you inject insulin with a needle or a syringe, the
Medicare prescription drug benefit (Part D) covers the insulin and any supplies you need to inject it. This includes syringes, needles, alcohol swabs and gauze. How much your insulin costs when it's covered by Part D depends on which Part D plan you're in, the type of insulin you need, and the pharmacy you buy it at. Part D also covers other drugs you may use at home to treat your diabetes as long as they're on your plan's list of covered drugs, called a formulary.

If you use an insulin pump,
Part B (outpatient medical coverage) covers the pump and the insulin as durable medical equipment (DME). If you have Original Medicare, you'll pay 20 percent of the cost of the insulin and the pump after you meet your Part B deductible of $140 in 2012. For Medicare to cover them, you must get the supplies from a Medicare-certified supplier. You pay the least if you go to a supplier who accepts Medicare assignment, which means the supplier takes Medicare's approved amount for an item as the full payment.

In some areas, Medicare recently started using a new competitive bidding process to pay for durable medical equipment. If you live in one of those areas and Part B is covering your insulin and pump as durable medical equipment, the coverage rules are slightly different. Medicare will only cover supplies you get from a supplier that's been awarded a contract with Medicare.

If you're in a
Medicare Advantage plan, your plan must also cover these diabetes supplies. However, your plan may have different rules, restrictions and costs. Call your plan to find out what you need to do to get your diabetes supplies covered.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 pound chicken tenders
  • 2/3 cup barbecue sauce (recommended: Bullseye Original)
  • Flour, for dusting surface
  • 1 (13.8-ounce) package pizza dough (recommended: Pillsbury Classic)
  • 3/4 cup shredded Gouda
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 3/4 cup shredded Parmesan
  • 1/2 medium red onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

On a floured surface, roll out dough and place on a greased sheet pan. Shape to fill the sheet pan, about a 15 by 10-inch rectangle. Spread remaining barbecue sauce evenly over pizza dough. Sprinkle Gouda, mozzarella, Parmesan, onions, and chicken over top. Bake for 20 minutes or until cheese bubbles. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro and cut into pieces.

Eileen's Idioms

"Off-the-wall"

"Rosie and Daisy were off the wall when they ate all the candy from the dish.

Meaning:  Shocking; very unusual

Origin: In handball, racquetball, and squash, a player hits the ball against a wall.  When the ball bounces off the wall, you don't always know where it is headed or what it is going to do.  Some word experts believe this is how the expression "off-the-wall", which describes unpredictable people or odd behavior, originated.
