Riverview Estates
The Front Porch News
March 2012

Greetings!

The Baptist Home of South Jersey opened its doors for ministry for 10 residents on March 10, 1954.  The original construction purchased for this purpose in 1952 was known as the Lippincott Mansion, built in 1864.  Only two years later, there was need for expansion.  Board members searched out the opportunity to purchase the surrounding land to meet this need.  The Baptist Home of South Jersey, now known as Riverview Estates, has grown to accommodate 122 residents, and has been called home by 940 residents through 58 years of service.  Riverview Estates has close bonds with American Baptist Churches and has been supported through good times and bad to continue our mission of serving a diverse aging population and their families by providing a continuum of care with respect, acceptance, dignity and joy.  Generous donations have made it possible for us to continue to care for residents who have little or no funds to pay for the care they need.

 1954

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."

Founders Day

Founder's Day, March 10th at 1:30 p.m., is a celebration of Worship in order to express our appreciation to God for His guidance and the blessing Riverview Estates has been in the lives of residents since our opening in 1954.  This year's guest speaker will be Rev. Jay Rambo, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Bordentown and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Riverview Estates.  All are welcome to attend.  A free will offering will be taken for our Benevolent Care Fund.  Following the ceremony will be the Annual Ice Cream Social featuring Sundaes and Root Beer Floats.

"Ask Jane" Director of Social Services

Dear Jane,

I have emphysema and need an oxygen tank. My doctor said Medicare covers oxygen tanks because they are durable medical equipment. What is durable medical equipment?

Signed,

Steve

Dear Steve,

Your doctor is right. Medicare does cover durable medical equipment (DME) such as oxygen tanks. Durable medical equipment is equipment that primarily serves a medical purpose, that can withstand repeated use, and that's appropriate for use in the home.

In addition to home oxygen equipment, durable medical equipment also includes things like walkers, wheelchairs, power scooters, hospital beds, diabetes self-testing equipment and supplies, and certain nebulizers. Durable medical equipment is covered under Medicare Part B.

In most cases, Medicare won't cover medical supplies, such as catheters, that are disposable and thrown away after use. An exception to this is that Part B does cover lancets and test strips for diabetes. Part D, the Medicare drug benefit, covers some other diabetes supplies. Another exception to this rule is that if you qualify for Medicare-covered home health care, Medicare may cover certain disposable supplies, such as intravenous supplies, gauze or catheters.

Medicare also won't cover items that aren't appropriate for use in a home, such as paraffin baths or oscillating beds, which are usually used under supervision in an institutional setting.

Items used for convenience rather than medical necessity also aren't covered. These include stairway elevators, grab bars, and bathtub and toilet seats-anything that can technically be used by people who have no medical condition. Finally, Medicare won't cover home modifications, such as installing ramps or widening doors to improve wheelchair access.

Sometimes, durable medical equipment is called DMEPOS, which stands for Durable Medical Equipment Prosthetics/Orthotics and Supplies. This is because Medicare also covers prosthetics, orthotics and certain supplies (like diabetes lancets). Prosthetics are devices that can replace a missing body part, such as a hand or leg. Orthotics are equipment like braces that help support or correct the malfunction of a limb or torso.

Eileen's Idioms

"Tickled Pink"

"Rosie was tickled pink when she saw her friend Daisy.

Meaning: To be amused or pleased; to be delighted, entertained and extremely happy.

Origin: If you tickle someone, his or her face often turns pink.  So, if someone is tickling you by doing or saying something so that you're giggling and your skin is getting reddish, then you're probably having a good time being "tickled pink".
