Riverview Estates
The Front Porch News
January 2012

Greetings!

The Social Club of Riverview Estates (SCORE) was started to assist with community interaction. Riverview Estates wanted to offer something that would benefit the residents as well as members of the community. To accomplish this, each month SCORE offers special entertainment to anyone interested. These events are held on the last Saturday of the month at 2:00 pm and are open to everyone.

Chuck Sikora

Special entertainment varies from month to month. Some examples are musicians, vocalists, bands, magicians, and more. A recent vocalist, Brett Speesler wow-ed us in November. December, Chuck Sikora, a vocalist/musician, performed a show that can't be beat. I'd like to invite you on January 28th to see the Paddlewheel Strutters perform old time mummers' music, a great way to bring in the New Year.

SCORE events are free to everyone. They are made possible through monetary contributions. All are welcome!

"Ask Jane" Director of Social Services

Hi Jane,

My Aunt entered an Assisted Living facility and now she is spending through all of her money. What happens next? Are there any programs that pay for Assisted Living? If so what are they and what do I need to apply?

Signed,

Debbie

Dear Debbie,

In the state of New Jersey a program exists to supplement an individual's income to pay for Assisted Living. The program is called Global Options and it also helps to pay for at home care as well. As long as your Aunt meets both the medical and financial guidelines and the facility in which she resides accepts Medicaid there should not be any problems.

Your first step is to go to the Board of Social Services in the county where your aunt resides and start an application when she is close to having less than two thousand dollars in assets. You will need to provide documents such as her birth certificate and social security card to establish her identity and age. The board of social services will ask for insurance information and what she pays for her insurance premiums, to allow her to keep her insurance. Bank statements are provided to prove financial need and all assets must be below two thousand dollars prior to the first day of the month that she is seeking approval for. Proof of income is required to establish the amount she is able to contribute towards her stay.

Some helpful ideas are to make prepaid funeral arrangements in the form of an irrevocable trust prior to the spend-down process. Also if she needs clothing or furniture this would be an excellent time to make sure she has what she needs. It is also helpful to work with the staff at the facility in which she resides so they can help you with any additional questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Jane Bohn, CSW

Eileen's Idioms

"Top Banana"

"Janice is top banana at Riverview Estates."

Meaning: The leading comedian in a variety show; a boss

Origin: Some word experts think this phrase may have started with an old comedy routine involving the sharing of bananas, but nobody is really sure.  Today people call the chief comic in a musical comedy or television show the "top banana."  Some people may also use the term humorously to refer to the boss in any group.
