Greetings!
Want to have the "Joy Joy Joy" down in your heart? Then please come and volunteer at Riverview Estates! Last month a teacher who brings students to read to our residents, commented on something one of her students said, "She never felt this feeling in her heart before and it felt good." Volunteers often say things just like that. They talk about what they receive instead of what they give. We proudly offer many opportunities for anyone who is interested in volunteering their time. These opportunities range from the simplest tasks to full commitments. We have volunteers from the age of 14 (the minimum age to be a volunteer) and up. Many students from nearby high schools come to complete their required service projects for graduation and college entrance requirements. After volunteering because they need to, they come back and give of their time because they want to. Our residents do appreciate having students in their midst. We also have younger student groups that participate in our Adopt-a-Grandparent program. These students read, share arts and crafts, perform musical numbers, and participate in the "prom" each year. The residents look forward to the bright young faces that visit twice a month as their adoptive grandchildren. April Is National Volunteer Month and Riverview Estates would like to thank every volunteer who comes through our doors for their gifts of love, time, talent and energy. Our annual Volunteer Brunch is held in April to honor all our volunteers. At this event we proudly announce our community and resident volunteers of the year. The volunteers' giving of their time and interests to our residents helps us to continue to give our residents a high quality of life. Come be a part of our family. Volunteering does your heart good! |
| "Ask Jane" Director of Social Services |
Dear Jane,
My mother is currently in a rehabilitation facility after a hip fracture and wants to return home to live independently after she is finished with her therapy but she is nervous about living alone. Does she qualify for any services at home?
Signed, Janice in New Jersey
Dear Janice,
That is a very good question. If your mother's primary insurance is Medicare or even HMO she can receive covered services at home to ease the transition. The social worker's function is to serve as the discharge planner and will coordinate what services she will need according to her individual needs. Most residents are discharged to home with therapy services. The therapists usually come out to the home about three times weekly. Some residents also require a home health aide to assist with bathing and dressing. If your mother qualifies for Medicaid she can be eligible for a home health aide depending again on her specific needs through a program called global options. Another service that can put both of your minds at ease is a life alert system. If your mother should be alone and fall or need medical attention she would just push the button on the pendent and help would arrive and you would be notified as well. This is something that has an installation charge and monthly rental fee both of which are reasonable priced for the peace of mind it brings. If she is not comfortable using the stove she can also apply for a program called meals on wheels which delivers meals to seniors at no or low cost. Some seniors even have companions who will spend time with them or perform light housekeeping and cooking tasks but insurance does not cover the cost. Some long term care policies even cover some cost of home health care required by a certified home health aide or nurse if it is deemed necessary. If she still feels too uncomfortable at home alone there is always the option of assisted living that provides all of these services twenty four hours a day for a reasonable price. Make sure your mother voices all of her concerns during her discharge planning meeting.
If you or someone you know has a question you would like to ask Jane please email you questions to jane@riverviewestates.org and put "ask Jane" in the subject line. I will post a question and its response in each month's newsletter.

| Eileen's Idioms | | "Through the Grapevine" | |
"Buddy heard through the grapevine that Rosie was being considered for a promotion."
Meaning: through the informal spreading of messages, gossip, rumors, or other confidential information from one person to another.
Origin: A grapevine is a long-stemmed plant that winds, climbs, and crepes from grape to grape. In a similar way, news can travel from person to person to person, either spoken or written. This 20th-century African-American idiom could go as far back as the 1600's.
