| Greetings!
April is National Volunteer Month!
As the volunteer coordinator at Riverview Estates I, Tina Shelley, ask you to join me in celebrating the importance of Riverview Estates volunteers. Volunteers are a vital part of the Riverview Estates family. Without the time and talents they bring, many resident programs would not be available. We are grateful for each volunteer who comes here to dedicate their time. We have volunteers from all walks of life and each job is tailored to his or her talents. Anyone age 14 and up is encouraged to apply for a position in our volunteer program.
Our volunteer opportunities include: friendly one-to-one visitors, ice cream cart helpers, bingo assistants, beauty salon assistants, laundry helpers, office workers, piano players, musicians, and many others. There are also special events throughout the year that require only one day of volunteering. If that appeals to you, consider: Flower Planting in May, Fine Art & Peach festival in August, or the Walk-a-Thon & Family Picnic in September. Whether you would like to spend a day at Riverview Estates or become a daily, weekly, or monthly volunteer, we have an opportunity for you!
In April we honor our volunteers at our Annual Volunteer Brunch. During the brunch, we present the Resident Volunteer of the Year Award and the Community Volunteer of the Year Award. This recognition is a rewarding experience for the nominees, as well as for the facility. The awardees are then nominated for an opportunity to be recognized at the state level.
If you are interested in volunteering at Riverview Estates or have any questions, please contact Tina Shelley at 856-829-2274 extension 151 or tina@riverviewestates.org .

| "Ask Jane" Director of Social Services |
Dear Jane,
What is the Medicare doughnut hole and how does it affect my elderly mother on social security?
Signed, Clara from Cinnaminson
Dear Clara,
The Medicare doughnut hole, also known as the Medicare Part D coverage gap, is the difference of the initial coverage limit and the catastrophic coverage threshold. After a Medicare beneficiary surpasses the prescription drug coverage limit, the Medicare beneficiary is financially responsible for the entire cost of prescription drugs until the expense reaches the catastrophic coverage threshold. When drug costs reach a total $2,700 for the year the beneficiary is responsible for the total cost of prescriptions until the costs go over $6,154. This can be a huge hardship for seniors with a limited income.
If your mother's income is under $24,432 a year she could possibly qualify for a program in NJ called PAAD (Pharmacy Assistance to the Aged and Disabled). If she qualified for this program she would be considered "dually eligible" and pay only $6 for generics and $7 for name brand prescriptions. Another program is Medicaid and she would need to meet financial and medical requirements to qualify. Under Medicaid she would also be considered "dually eligible" and pay nothing for prescription medications. Individuals identified as "dual eligible" by CMS (Center for Medicare Service) are not subject to the doughnut hole, as their prescription coverage is fully subsidized.
With the passage for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010), people who fall within the doughnut hole will soon receive $250 to help with payments. Jane Bohn, CSW Director of Social Services Riverview Estates jane@riverviewestates.org
If you or someone you know has a question you would like to ask Jane please email you questions to jane@riverviewestates.org and put "ask Jane" in the subject line. I will post a question and its response in each month's newsletter.

| Avocado and Grapefruit Salad Recipe |
Prep time: 20 minutes Serves 3 Ingredients - 5 oz (150g) of fresh watercress
- 2 pink grapefruits, segmented
- 2 ripe avocados, peeled, de-stoned & diced
- 4 spring onions, finely sliced
For the dressing:
- 1 tbsp of tarragon vinegar (or white wine vinegar)
- 3 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
- Fine sea salt & freshly ground black pepper
Directions
First take your watercress and rinse it thoroughly in cold running water, then use a salad spinner to dry it out completely. This is important because any water on the leaves will weaken the dressing when it's added.
Next take your avocados and slice them in half, remove the stones and their skin, then cut the pieces into small dice and place them in a large bowl. Take the spring onions and slice them into fine round slices, add them to the bowl along with the watercress and combine together lightly then place to one side.
Next remove all of the peel from the grapefruits with a sharp knife, then cut out the flesh from each segment and drop them into a separate dish.
Take a container that has a tight fitting lid and add the olive oil and the tablespoon of tarragon vinegar, add some seasoning then shake vigorously to emulsify it. Check the seasoning and alter it to suit.
When youre ready to serve your salad simply add the dressing to the other ingredients in the bowl and combine lightly so that everything is coated in the dressing. Divide between three plates then add the grapefruit segments to each plate. |

| Eileen's Idioms |
| "Walking on Eggshells" |
|
Janice was walking on egg shells around her neighbor after learning her dog ruined all their tulips.
Meaning: To be very cautious; to proceed warily
Origin: This saying first appeared in Italy in the late 1500's.The writer who came up with idiom must have had the following image in mind: A person stepping very carefully on a floor of eggs trying not to break a single shell. It can't be done, of course, even the hard boiled eggs, but it gets across the idea of doing something with great caution.
