Greetings!

Come out and Join our Alzheimer's support group

Do you or someone you know care for someone with Alzheimer's disease?  This is the perfect group for you.  Our group meets the first Wednesday of every month at Riverview Estates located at 303 Bank Ave., Riverton, NJ 08077.  We offer information on the disease as well as care giving tips and resources.  We have speakers and are open to discuss any topic that you may be interested in.  Come learn about the ten warning signs of Alzheimer's disease and new treatment options.  We are a small informal group and serve light refreshments.  Anyone is welcome to attend.  It is a great feeling knowing you are not the only one out there dealing with this difficult disease.  Learn about caregiver burnout and stress and how to avoid it.  We are here to support you.

If you would like any further information or have questions regarding this group please feel free to contact Jane Bohn at (856)829-2274 ext. 113.

Upcoming Events from Resident Life

October finds the residents getting ready for fall.  We will hold our silent auction and bake sale on October 3rd.  This silent auction helps raise funds to purchase items used in the "Wish List" gift bags given to the residents at Christmas time.  The auction will begin at 10:00 a.m. for the bidding and the final drawing at 2:00 p.m.  We will have many baked items for sale this year.  A lunch of hot dogs, soda and chips will be offered.

Residents also look forward to the beginning of our Adopt-A-Grandparent program when we partner with the fifth graders at Riverton Elementary School.  This is a great intergenerational program where residents and children alike have a great opportunity to build lasting relationships.  Doreen Walter is the fifth grade teacher instrumental in getting this program off the ground and has been faithful through the years in making this program a great success.

The American  Baptist Women's Mission will begin again on October 15, 2009 with members joining the  Moorestown Baptist Church on the third Thursday of each month to serve God through their mission work.

Our SCORE Event for the month of October is Marc Shaw.  Marc has been to Riverview Estates many times in the past and is a favorite entertainer of ours.  He sings a variety of songs from the ever popular 30's, 40's, and 50's.  He provides a lively, interactive program.  Come out and join the fun.  He is sure to send you on your way with a song in your heart and a smile on your face.
Check Your Medicines

Doctors, nurses, and pharmacists work hard to keep you healthy, but unfortunately, medication errors occasionally occur. The more information you have, the better able you are to prevent errors and take care of yourself. Below are five simple tips for using medicines safely.

1. Bring a list or a bag with ALL your medicines when you go to your doctor's office, the pharmacy, or the hospital.  Include all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements that you use.  If your doctor prescribes a new medicine, ask if it is safe to use with your other medicines.  Remind your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to any medicines.

2. Ask questions about your medicines.  Ask questions and make sure you understand the answers.  Choose a pharmacist and doctor you feel comfortable talking with about your health and medicines.  Take a relative or friend with you to ask questions and to remind you about the answers later.  Write down answers.

3. Make sure your medicine is what the doctor ordered.  Does the medicine seem different than what your doctor wrote on the prescription, or does it look different than what you expected?  Does a refill look like it is a different shape, color or size than what you were given before?  If something seems wrong, ask the pharmacist to double check it.  Most errors are first found by patients.

4. Ask how to use the medicine correctly.  Read the directions on the label and any handouts you receive when you pick up your prescription.  Have the pharmacist or doctor explain anything you do not understand.  Are there other medicines, foods, or activities (such as driving, drinking alcohol, or using tobacco) that you should avoid while using the medicine?  Ask if you need lab tests to check how the medicine is working or to make sure it doesn't cause harmful side effects.

5. Ask about possible side effects.Side effects can occur with many medicines.  Ask your doctor or pharmacist what side effects to watch for and which ones are serious.  Some side effects may bother you but will get better after you have been using the medicine for awhile.  Call your doctor right away if you have a serious side effect or if a side effect does not get better.  A change in the medicine or the dose may be needed.  Taking an active role in making decisions about your health can improve your care, and simple checks could save your life.
Cranberry Upside-down Cake

A healthy take on a traditional Thanksgiving favorite

Ingredients
·
3/4 cup unsalted butter
·  3/4 cup light-brown sugar
·  3/4 pound cranberries
·  1½ cups all-purpose flour
·  2 teaspoons baking powder
·  1/4 teaspoon salt
·  1 cup granulated sugar
·  2 egg yolks
·  2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided
·  1/2 cup 2 percent milk
·  2 egg whites
·  1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
·  1 cup heavy cream (optional)
·  1 tablespoon confectioner's sugar (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Butter a 9-by-9-inch cake pan. In a small pan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons butter and the brown sugar and pour the mixture into the bottom of the cake pan. Place the cranberries in the cake pan on top of the melted butter and sugar.

2. Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a mixing bowl, cream the remaining 1/2 cup butter with the sugar. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and mix well. Add the milk alternately with the dry ingredients, folding well after each addition.

3. In a small mixing bowl, using clean beaters, beat the egg whites to soft peaks. Add the cream of tartar and continue to beat until the peaks hold their shape. Fold the whites into the cake batter. Spread the batter over the fruit in the cake pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, about 55 to 60 minutes.

4. Remove the cake from the oven and run a small knife around the edges. Let sit for 15 minutes. Invert the cake onto a serving platter and let it sit another 5 minutes, then remove the pan.

5. Optional: Whip the heavy cream to soft peaks. Flavor with the remaining vanilla and the confectioners' sugar.

6. Serve slices of cake topped with a dollop of the whipped cream, if desired.
