Shape Up RI News

February 4, 2008

Greetings!  Rajiv Kumar

Let the competition begin!

With over 11,000 participants and growing by the day, our Shape Up RI 2008 healthy lifestyle challenge is officially underway.

Governor Carcieri and a spirited crowd of 800 Rhode Islanders, from as far away as Westerly and Little Compton, joined us in Providence on Saturday to launch this exciting campaign.

"This is an incredible movement," Dr. David Katz of ABC News told all of us on Saturday morning. "This is a public health mission of the very first order." (Read the ProJo article and read Dr. Katz's Prevention.com blog entry about the event.)

I cannot thank you enough for being a part of this statewide health campaign. I can sense your great enthusiasm, courage, and hope as we embark on this journey together. As a medical student, it is truly an honor to be leading such a committed and passionate group of health-minded individuals. I am going to do everything I can to make this experience one that you will never forget.

I know we have all been eagerly waiting for this day. So clip on your pedometer, slip on your blue wristband, put on your game face -- and let's get started.

Good luck to you and your team!

Yours in Health,

Rajiv Kumar
Chairman

The Important of Goal Setting
GoalsTalk with your team about goals

Experts agree that an excellent way to meet your nutrition, exercise, and weight loss targets is to set realistic goals.

For example, if you haven't exercised in a while, a three-mile run might not be practical; but walking at lunch with your team for 15 - 20 minutes is a very attainable goal. When you set realistic goals, you're more likely to stick with your fitness program. And when you think positively about your goals, you're more likely to reach them.

We encourage you to work with your team captain to decide on healthy and achievable goals. You should then develop a customized plan for success.

By working together and keeping an open dialogue, everyone can be successful in this competition. Choosing activities you enjoy will also help you maintain your daily physical activity. If you need a variety of activities to stay motivated, combine a few that appeal to you.

Our research and past experience shows that teams that discuss goal setting frequently tend to have the best success in Shape Up RI.
