We got skills . . . mad skills!
In Exodus 36, we can see a great example of God's people combining the broad diversity of their abilities to glorify God. After leaving slavery in Egypt, the need arose for a portable sanctuary to use for worship. God not only dictated the plans for this structure to Moses but also specified how the plans should be carried out. The passage describes how all of the people with resources donated material from which to construct the tabernacle. It goes on to point out how those with special skills transformed the donated material into a structure usable for worship by all of the people.
All the women skilled at weaving brought their weavings of blue and purple and scarlet fabrics and their fine linens. And all the women who were gifted in spinning, spun the goats' hair...
...Moses told the Israelites, "See, God has selected Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. He's filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and know-how for making all sorts of things, to design and work in gold, silver, and bronze; to carve stones and set them; to carve wood, working in every kind of skilled craft. And he's also made him a teacher, he and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. He's gifted them with the know-how needed for carving, designing, weaving, and embroidering in blue, purple, and scarlet fabrics, and in fine linen. They can make anything and design anything" (Exodus 36:25-26, 30-35, The Message). Chapter 36 shows us the entire building process: design, resource acquisition, training, construction, and decoration. This description serves as an example of how God intends to combine the abilities of his people to accomplish great things for his glory and our benefit.
The same is true for our church and our individual lives. What abilities do you bring to the table? What skills can you offer? Don't hesitate to complete the Abilities Survey and let us know how you can help. Don't underestimate the value of the abilities God has given you.

Today's Prayer:
Dear God, I recognize that the skills you've given me are gifts from you. Forgive me for the times I've been selfish with my abilities, keeping them to myself instead of sharing them freely with your people. Show me how all of my skills can be used to glorify you and build up your church. |
