40 Days Header
One week from today, my DVR is programmed to record Heroes, NBC's "epic drama that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities." The characters in the show realize that they have been given their abilities--flying, bending time and space, reading thoughts, and more--for the purpose of saving humanity from an impending crisis.

You might not be able to bend time and space like Hiro Nakamura (though I can certainly see how useful that might be in ministry), but nonetheless, you've been given extraordinary abilities to use as a part of God's plan to redeem humanity. This week, let's realize that the abilities God has given each of us--creating a spreadsheet, hosting a dinner party, hanging drywall, coaching basketball, decorating cupcakes, or (in my case) watching TV--become extraordinary when we use them for His purpose. Remember God's instruction to each of us: And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father (Colossians 3:17 NLT).

Later this week you will have the opportunity to catalog all of your abilities. Meanwhile, if you have not completed the Discovering Your Heart's Passion questionnaire or the Spiritual Gift Inventory, take time to do that today.
Today's Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for giving me abilities to use for you. Please help me recognize that you created me to do exactly the things that you want me to do for. Protect me from the tendency to minimize what I can do or to compare my abilities with those of other people. Instead, let me recognize that you created me to be useful for you.
