Caring for People Who Care for PetsJuly 2010

Laurel Lagoni Greetings!

Simon Sinek is a coach who talks about how great leaders inspire action.  He says those of us in business shouldn't tell people what we do, we should tell them why we do it.

"The goal is not to do business with everyone who needs what you have," Sinek goes on, "but to do business with people who believe what you believe."

At World by the Tail, Inc., we love doing business with you because you're one of the people who believes what we believe!  Like us, you're passionate about promoting and protecting the human-animal bond and about comforting and supporting people when that bond is broken by a pet's death.  We're so glad you're part of our family!

Yet, some days this "work of the heart" can be challenging.  I hope this month's team article, written by practice co-owner Dana Durrance, will give you some insight about how to work with the anxiety clients may feel when their pets are ill.  And, in the repeat of last week's Wednesday Wisdom posting, you may find an idea about how to use some "hee haws" to calm your own anxiety!

As always, we're committed to providing as many practice tools and trustworthy information for you as we can.  Check out the new resources on the Veterinary Wisdom® website and watch for the launch of our completely redesigned referral website www.VeterinaryWisdomforPetParents.com later this month.  We think it will be just the resource you're looking for to help your clients prepare to say good-bye to a pet.

Hope you had a wonderful 4th of July weekend and that you'll take some time to enjoy the warm summer days ahead.

In friendship,
Laurel

P.S.  If you have a few minutes, I highly recommend that you take a peak at a very unique project created by an artist friend of ours named Jenine Durland.  You'll find a description and the links to it on the VetWisdomCafe.blog.

If your dog was interviewed and animated by Jenine, what would he or she tell you about life?  Go see what some NYC dogs had to say!

Words of Wisdom

"Ranchers have a trick to deal with a corral of skittish horses: they place a mule in their midst.  Mules are generally more relaxed and laid-back than horses, and they exert a calming influence on high-strung equines."       -Alan Cohen,  A Daily Dose of Sanity

DonkeyAre you a horse or a mule?  I think I flip back and forth between the two, but most often these days, I'm the skittish, anxious equine.  Yet, I loooooonnnnnng to be a mule!

Now, don't misunderstand.  The mule I'm referring to isn't the stubborn, obnoxiously loud farm donkey you may know from children's books and stereotypes.  The mule I want to be is of the peaceful, grass-chomping variety.  Relaxed and laid-back.  This mule simply watches the chaos created by others as it swirls around her, calming flicking an ear or a tail once in awhile if a fly gets to close for comfort.  You know, Eeyore, but without the glum personality.

Notes from the Consultant's Corner: "It's Anxiety Holding on Line 1"
by Dana Durrance, MA

Tell me if this sounds familiar. Mrs. Smith has just dropped off her dog Spencer for chemotherapy to treat his recently diagnosed lymphosarcoma. You've just spent a whole hour talking with her, answering questions, addressing her concerns, and explaining things thoroughly. Fifteen minutes later she calls again to see what's going on. You assure her that Spencer is fine, that he's not started his chemotherapy yet, but is resting comfortably in your back treatment area. You tell her you will call her when the treatment is over and when you have any updates. Twenty-five minutes later she calls again and wants to know if Spencer is doing okay. Twenty minutes after that, she calls yet again.

So in walks your frustration. You've got tons of things to do today and nowhere on the list is talking with Mrs. Smith every 20 minutes. Doesn't Mrs. Smith have anything else to do in her life but bother you?

the ClayPaws® Connection - Tips and techniques

Use Plastic Wrap for Clean ClayPaws® Prints

 by Tammy Durham

We may have already passed this tip along to you, but it bears repeating. We first heard about this idea from a loyal ClayPaws® customer!

Often, when making prints for your clients, dirt, fur, and other debris get into your nice, clean patty. An easy way to avoid this mess? Use plastic wrap.

Cover your flat, kneaded ClayPaws® patty with one layer of plastic wrap. (Our "tipster" says to use the cheapest kind - it works best!) Once you've got the plastic wrap placed (making sure there are no wrinkles), bring the patty to the paw of the animal, and make the print as usual. The plastic wrap is thin enough to allow for a nice print, but will protect that bright, clean clay from the dirt, fur, etc.

Do you have a trick or tip you use in your clinic to make the best prints possible? Send me an email and I'll share it in a future newsletter!!
