Caring for People Who Care for PetsMay 2010

Laurel Lagoni Greetings!

It's been a busy month here at World by the Tail, Inc.  The response to our latest Veterinary Wisdom® catalog mailing has been great.  If you're one of our new customers, welcome to our ClayPaws® family!  We're so grateful that we get to work with the kindest, most thoughtful veterinary teams in the country...

Pet parents call us almost every day to thank us for creating ClayPaws® kits.  They are so touched that their veterinary team provided them with such a treasured memory of their pets.  Thank YOU for making the effort to provide this keepsake for your grieving clients.

On another note, I have two new "productions" to tell you about that may also help you help clients in your daily practice.  The first is our newly-designed VeterinaryWisdom.com website.  We've made our site for animal care business teams easier to navigate, grouping similar products and information together rather than scattering across the home page.  Now, there are "icon shortcuts" for items like Client Hand-outs and separate menu buttons along the left side for all things related to ClayPaws® kits.  It's a much faster and efficient way for you to find what you need to help your clients.

Now, we're in the process of redesigning our "sister" site, our referral site specifically for pet parents.  We're loading it with articles, free ebooks, and helpful referrals so your clients will have an internet resource they can trust to provide credible information about preparing for pet loss.  Stay tuned for more updates about that website next month!

And, finally, please pick up a copy of the newly revised Connecting with Clients: Practical Communication for 10 Common Situations that I co-authored with Dana Durrance.  This new second edition boasts an amazing new feature with access to free online training videos for your staff! It's available from World by the Tail, Inc., as well as from AAHA Press.

Well, enough about me.  Drop me an email and let me know what you've been up to in the area of human-animal bond support.  We'd love to tell your story in an upcoming issue of VeterinaryWisdom® News.

Happy National Pet Week (May 2 - 9)!

I'm often asked about the criteria people should use when choosing a veterinarian to care for their precious and beloved pets.  Location? Specialty training? Cost? Facility and equipment? Read the rest at www.veterinarywisdom.com/wednesdaywisdom.htm.

Ten Ways to Help Children
With Pet Loss
by Laurel Lagoni, MS

The death of your family pet may also be your childrens' first experience with loss and grief. It's an important time, then, for you to teach your children how to express their grief in ways that are emotionally healthy and free of shame or embarassment. The following guidelines may help you provide support for your children when your family pet dies or when you know the death is coming soon:

  • Be as direct and honest as possible. Avoid euphemisms like, "put to sleep" when discussing death because these words can be frightening and confusing to children. Young children (under age four) have difficulty understanding the difference between sleep and death. Therefore, always answer questions as directly as possible and in an age appropriate manner. Use words like, "Fluffy has died," or "Because Fluffy is sick and can't get better, we're doing to help her to die, because we love her and don't want her to suffer."

Adding Embellishments to Your ClayPaws® Prints

 by Tammy Durham

You can be as creative as you want with your prints! You can leave them with simply the print of your pet's paw (which is what I have done)... Or you can go crazy with decorations!

We saw one print that had a little glitter star pressed into each pad of the paw print. It was a simple effect, but very cute! I personally love glitter. You can add glitter after the print is baked! (Be sure when adding anything before baking that it is safe to go into the oven!)

You can use our ClayPaws® charms and press them into unbaked clay, or glue them on after it is baked. (We have bones, fish, stars, and numerous hearts to choose from!)

Adding a name to your print is easy as well with a number of options. To "draw" a name in, you can use a stylus. Or to stamp a name in you can use our alphabet stamp kit.

We would love to see some of your prints! Send us an email if you have a print you'd like to share with us!
