Caring for People Who Care for Pets |
January 2010 | |
Greetings!
A new year begins and we have a new addition to our World by the Tail, Inc., family! Take a peek at Debby and her new grand-daughter Katie.

Then check out Debby in a much more frightening role---the victim at our company's 'Murder Mystery' holiday party. We had a blast! Eighteen of us spent 5 hours eating delicious food and trying to figure out who murdered 'Fiona' (Debby's alter ego) and why! Hope your holidays were fun, too.

Now, with 2009 behind us, we're busy getting organized for another great year of being of service to you. We can get you organized, too!
Our calendar can feature your own pet, pets owned by your staff members, or even your long-time patients. The attractive scrapbook pages and photos make great conversation pieces for your waiting room or exam room walls.
As for me, I'm grateful to have another year working in a business I love and to finally have my globe-trotting daughter home from her semester in London. How many shoes did Bryn end up bringing home with her?
Not one of us guessed right! She surprised me, too, and only bought one new pair in London. So, the answer to September's newsletter contest called "How many shoes will Bryn come home from London with?" is 12.

Helpful Phrases for
Condolence Cards & Notes by Laurel Lagoni, MS
When patients die, the condolences you and your staff offer can make all the difference in the world to your clients. Follow-up telephone calls, flowers, and ClayPaws® prints are wonderful, heartfelt ways to express your sympathy. In addition, sending condolence cards that specifically address the grief and healing process associated with the loss of a pet is a routine practice in many veterinary clinics today and much appreciated by clients.
Condolence cards are available from a multitude of companies. It's a good idea to purchase a variety of cards in large quantities and keep them on hand in your clinic. Clinical experience says it's best to sign cards and write notes in your own handwriting. Clients who receive condolences with the name of a veterinary practice pre-stamped on a card report feeling like the gesture is more of a marketing ploy than a sincere effort to provide comfort.

We get many phone calls and emails at World by the Tail headquarters asking about using a ClayPaws® print outdoors.
We do have instructions on protecting a print for outdoor use. The first tip we give to anyone wanting to do this, however, is be sure this isn't your one and only print! Even with protective measures, your print can (and probably will) deteriorate outside in the weather! If you have only one print of a deceased pet, we suggest you make a copy of your print (you can order a copy kit which includes everything you need!) and keep the precious original safe inside!
To prepare a print for use outside:
First, be sure your print is baked. (See baking instructions here.)
Next, brush on one (1) coat of shellac and let dry. Then, brush on 3 thin coats of Sculpey Finishing Glaze. Let it dry between each coating.
Once the last coat of glaze is dry, finish with one coat of either a 2-part Epoxy or "Verathane Diamond Wood Finish Interior Glaze". (Available in a craft or home store.) | |
