Greetings!

The first round of Salt and Light events in North America concluded this weekend in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico. We estimate that more than 350 Friends will have taken part in these events this fall. What is exciting is that for many of those Friends, this has been their first experience or connection with Friends World Committee.

Felicity McCartney, Sheila Hoyer, Anne Bennett and Rachel Stacy delivered messages of inspiration and hope to groups both large and small, in a variety of settings and locations.  We are grateful to the many Friends who took care of details to make all the events possible.

We are in the process of putting together some of the outcomes of these events: What are the issues that local Friends are weighing in on most?  What are the 'nuggets' that have been gleaned from the conversations? Your support of this programming and our work in general is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Margaret full name
Executive Secretary

Live webcast of Latin American Peace Conference
peace conf planners
Planning group includes Friends from El Salvador, Mexico and the U.S.

After nearly two years of planning, the Latin American Peace Conference of the Historic Peace Churches will take place starting on Sunday, November 28th in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.  Of the approximately 70 participants, twenty Quakers - about equally divided between men and women - will participate.  This event will be viewable as a live webcast during the event, which concludes on December 3rd.  The proceedings will be video recorded for future viewing as well.

Despite disappointments about not every country where Friends are present being represented, a diverse group of participants from all three denominations - Friends, Mennonites and Brethren - involving people who have devoted years to peace work on many different levels, are expected.  Participants will worship together, listen to each others' stories, break down into small groups to focus on specific aspects of peace seeking, and in the end will created a formal conference document that includes an action plan for working more effectively for peace throughout Latin America.

FWCC Section of the Americas has committed its restricted resources for peace work for this conference.

WC logoSixth World Conference of Friends update

Yearly meetings should already have told FWCC's World Office how many of their allocated delegate places to the April 2012 World Conference of Friends they will be taking up. The deadline for forwarding the names and contact information of delegates is January 15, 2011, but you are encouraged to send them at any time to the World Office of FWCC.

Please publicize the conference widely within your yearly meeting and begin to raise funds to support not only your delegates but also the travel and accommodation fund for Friends from the developing world.  We will provide details on how you can help in 2011.

What is the difference between 'Salt and Light' events and Global Change gatherings?

Salt and Light events are opportunities for Friends in the Americas to take part in conversations leading up to the 2012 World Conference of

Woodland S&L
Felicity McCartney and Sheila Hoyer respond to questions after event in Woodland, NC.

Friends, by considering its theme of Being Salt and Light: Friends living the kingdom of God in a broken world.  Guided by speakers who have themselves 'been salt or light' in broken places or circumstances, and others who can help us understand the theology behind the theme, these events are planned and coordinated by the Section Office.

Contact us for more information on how you can host a Salt & Light event.

Global Change cluster meetings are an initiative of FWCC's World governing body, the Central Executive Committee. These meetings are intended as independently convened gatherings led by interested groups of Friends. The outcomes are reported directly to the world-wide coordinating body of the Global Change initiative.
